Hi All, ok here is my current status: - 42 days passed - 1074 cancer sticks not smoked I've been jumping back and forth from the patch 14mg and the gum. I've tried quitting before, but this time, I wanna be done with smoking for good, I've never been more serious. I think this go round, I've gotten together the mental game (ie: when people smoke around me, it doesn't bother me... or after a meal... etc). But my body is still hurting, still needs the nicotine, constantly, I'm in pain or craving or whatever... you know what I mean. I think what I need to do, as painful as it is, is to basically de-toxic. Get rid of nicotine aids, I need it out of my blood completely. I can basically lock myself in for 2-3 days and just deal with it, maybe take some tylenols, relax, take it easy, whatever. MY QUESTION IS: Is that long enough to get the nicotine out of my system? In theory, once it's out, my body won't crave it anymore. The mental game will be there, but my body won't crave as much. I believe 2 to 3 days is accurate as it relates to getting the nicotine physically out of your system. The cravings and withdrawals are completely dependedent on the individual but usually last quite some time (what Phil's referring to). I had used nic gum until one week ago, and since I quit that my crave has dissipated considerably. This last week has been a lot easier. So, everywhere I've read says 2 to 3 days to get it out of your system - heres my opinion on nic replacements. Try go without them after a while, and if it gets so bad that you are about to pick up a cigarette, go back on them. had similar issues to you - killed the gum 1 week ago - which took away a strong under current type crave that wouldnt leave me. Fell 100 times better without any nico in the system. OK, I guess I will put in my two cents now. For me I used the patch of two days. Then I took it off and didn't use one again. I told myself it wasn't working so when I took it off the withdraws would, hopefully, seem less severe. I don't know if they really were or not, but it worked for me. But I just had to get all the nic out of my system so that it had less time to play with my head first hand....and it was only the habit that was left. That is hard enough to deal with alone, without the constant state of detox. And for me, yeah, after the 3rd day, I felt a lot better, less symptoms, but still had/have a hard time sleeping. But now, I rarely crave a cigarette, although I think about them still daily. I also adopted two mantras I see here all the time and they have helped me to just get through the hard times. Smoking is not an option and NOPE...because like so many others, I know if I have one it would never be enough. And if all else fails, read the posts by Joe Cool. I am not, by any means, try to knock the gum...I do know how many people have used it and it has helped them to quit. However, my step-father quit smoking cigarettes with the aid of the gum....he is now addicted to the gum. He has been chewing the gum for over 4 years. Just be careful and if you feel that you are still craving, maybe set yourself a quit date for the gum...just a thought! Your stats are awesome though...very encouraging and inspirational...stay strong!!!! ifyouplease, I can't say what is right for you....but I started out like you. This is what I did. 1)The first two days I wore the 14 mg patch and chewed 3 to 4 pieces of gum. 2) The third day I cut the patch in half and chewed 3 pieces of 2mg gum. I did that for about two weeks. (half a 14mg patch cut in half and few pieces of 2mg gum when needed) 3) After the couple of weeks I did not use the patch and still used about 3 pieces of 2mg gum. I did this for another couple of weeks. 4) As I got past the month mark I noticed on a couple of days I had only used 2 pieces of gum. That didn't happen often..but it did happen. I was not able to give up the morning one. I also found I needed the second one after I got home from work. But could give up the rest till bed. 5)I am not using two pieces of gum a day...but I bite them in half. To my surprise I got sick on the gum Sunday....and was going to swear it off. I did not have any gum after I threw up sunday morning. Monday I had my first piece after coming home from work. Maybe I should have not had the half piece of gum yesterday....but I did and I won't beat myself up over it. Today I had two half pieces. So now... I need to wean off of just 2 to 3 "half" pieces of 2mg gum. THANKS TO Phil...and JQ555 I feel excited to feel that total freedom from any and all craves. Even if it isn't permenant!! I don't want to become MENTALLY dependant on the gum. Knowing that person still had to buy that gum after a couple of years SCARES ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :8o: Mercy.......(me!!) They say 3 days and it's out of your system. I chewed the gum for about 4 days after I quit smoking, and then just quit that too. It was easier for me to go through withdrawal just one time, and be done with it. Good luck! My vote is to try 14 mg. for a week w/o gum then see if you are ready to go to 7 mg. for a week or so. Then drop all patch and have gum for an emergency. That's what I did and I'm so afraid of getting the nic back into my system that I havent' cracked open the emergency gum. Though I really go through the Wrigleys.
