I'm sick...is this normal?

I'd love to know this too...I'm convinced it's just my allergies, but I've been sitting here all day with a tissue in my nose and my eyes watering right down my face. I've had allergy attacks like this before, but never this severe and long-lasting!

I have gotten sick with a cold of some sort everytime I have tried quitting. I know others have experienced the same thing. I'm not sure of the relationship between the two things, but I'm sure somebody here does. Tutti makes a good point too. I know I've been spraying everything in sight this week. The dog didn't care for it much. :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 2/16/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 6 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 133 Amount Saved: $25.8 Life Gained: Days: 1 Hrs: 3 Mins: 29 Seconds: 15

It sounds like we're all in the same boat and the irony is I'm right behind Audrey in the days quit. Coincidence? I think not. I know I should go to the Dr. but damn, I really really hate antibiotics. Definetly a sinus infection though, not allergies as I am already on allergy meds. I think the small blessing is that if I even tried to smoke right now my lungs would cave in or some other painfully dramatic event. AND! I have been spraying the crap outta my office cause on top of everything else I've been tooting like a maniac  I can blame that on my quit too, cause if I was smoking I would be thin and wouldn't eat salad for lunch everyday! :) On the bright side, cigarette smoke has become mildly offensive and not at all apealing. I've had a cold/caugh since I quit. Its getting worse and now I'm losin my voice completely. I'm on day 21 which is awesome but my chest hurts sooo bad. I don't see sickness as a withdrawel symptom so whats the deal? It's been getting progressively worse and I'm taking so many cold meds my head is spinning. I don't wanna go to the Dr. I know he'll just give me antibiotics which gives me terrible side effects... My allergies went nuts after quitting and I'm still dealing with it. I AM on antibiotics because I developed a major sinus infection. Don't ignore too long otherwise you might have a big problem to get rid of. I've been trying to find out why as well. Some suggest it is the "special" way our bodies are expelling the toxins from smoking. Others have suggested that smoking masks allergies so now they can "have at it". It sucks. Don't let all those "I feel great" posts get to you. Like we keep reading "all quits are different" and we just may be blessed with the not so pleasant journey. They all assure me that one day I will wake up and all will be clear. And so I wait patiently. Don't wait as long as I did to go to the Dr. My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/16/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 37 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 752 Amount Saved: $103.6 Life Gained: Days: 3 Hrs: 15 Mins: 50 Seconds: 57

I'm just curious but are any of you that are suffering from allergies burning candles, using carpet deodorizer, or any product to make your home/office smell nice, clean, and smoke free? If so, you may have an allergy to those things. I know I can't even walk down the laundry soap isle at the store without going into a sneezing fit. And I did use candles, carpet fresh, and things like that when I quit and did sneeze quite a bit. I found that I can only use Hazelnut candles. I don't sneeze using those. I walked through a cloud of cigarette smoke yesterday and I did go into a major sneezing fit. Good Luck!! Janeathena, It isn't uncommon for quitters to experience a productive cough after they quit. If your symptoms are getting worse, please consult your doctor. Nurse29, Your heightened sense of smell may be overwhelming another part of this sense; the chemical sense which is responsible for stimulating the nerve endings in our eyes, nose, mouth and throat. These nerve endings are responsible for feeling smells. Ex: When your eyes water from the smell of an onion. Consult your doctor, he/she is the best authority to make this distinction. Hope this helps. Danielle ________________________ The SSC Support Team

My opinion only...when we quit smoking, our bodies go through huge physical changes. Some we notice pretty quickly, some later, and some people have some and not others. It stands to reason that our throats, noses and lungs are sitting up and taking notice, now that we're not pumping four thousand chemicals into them. They begin to regenerate themselves from the damage we've done to them and we begin to heal. And I do believe that our bodies react by trying to expel toxins, through the skin, through the sinuses, or other places. :gasp: It may be an allergy, it may be an infection, or it may be healing. In any case, because you DON'T know for sure what it is, I would suggest you check with a medical professional if it goes on longer than seems normal.
