Hi Karen, Im from Ireland 1 stone is 14lb we calculate weight in pound & stone. The Uk is the same ! I actually have no urge to smoke to be honest my new obsession is loosing the weight! It has to stop soon because im ready to crack up ! Is there anyone that has lost weight while quitting ? Hi Im new to this site , but here goes. Ok just to set the picture. I lost 2 & 1/2 stone (35 pounds) 3 years ago and have kept it off, with 3 hours step aerobics classes and also eating healty. I have quit smoking 6 weeks and have gained 5 pound ! I have increased my excercise by 4 hour a week, I am not snaking on rubbish food! I am finding this really hard. I am not thinking of smoking but it is sooo frustrating. I know its better to not smoke but I am giving it my all I actually dont think I can do anymore! I am aware that my metabolism had lowered so when will it balance and when am i going to loose this weight its not a lot but if I was to gain 1lb every week before i know it I wil be back to where i was 3 years ago and I dont think I could handle that ! Help needed please.

I'm too new to this to know the answer as to if anyone has ever lost weight during their quit. I can tell you that I'm diabetic and had no choice but to cut my carbs down. NOT OUT but way down. The body can't go without carbs or you'll become weak. The diabetic diet which is, lots of lean protein, skim milk or 2% milk, and lots of veggies has caused me to lose about 20 lbs. I can eat a huge steak, a SMALL potato, and salad three times a day and never gain a pound. I don't know if it'll stay that way now that I've quit smoking but I'm hoping that it will. I can only recommend the diet that caused me to lose so much weight and I wasn't even trying to lose. I wish I could be of more help. Interesting information, Freebird. I've always been slender, and have gained about 4 pounds, and it's not the amount... its the thought of: Oh no! When will it end? I know... not positive thinking, but I don't want it to run away with me! My problem is not wanting to cut out the chocolate and daily pepsi. From what you said, Freebird, about the sugars and salt...since you put it that way, I have more reason to cut it out. I've found if I have information and understanding, I'll be a much better student and do what I'm supposed to do, i.e. cut out the junk! Think I'll try doing without those fixes today and see how it goes. Thanks! Hi Lindak - I've been watching posts and a very few people do lose weight when quitting smoking and some stay the same. However, I think that for most of us, weight gain is common at the beginning of our quit. It is frustrating but I think, for most, it is temporary. For the first 3 months, I gained weight soooooooo easily (despite going to the gym regularly). Now...with some extra effort it is coming off and I am focussing on eating better and getting healthier. I remember going to the gym when I smoked...It was amazing how much difference it made if I worked out before I smoked (i.e. in the morning) or after I had smoked (re: heart rate/how winded I got etc.) Now that we don't smoke...we can focus on getting thinner AND healthier. You will be amazed by how much better your heart and lungs will be working! Congrats on 6 weeks quit! Hey serenity - I didn't have a huge gain in appetite until after I came off the NRT's...then I was hungry ALL the time! I posted about this and found out that some other people had an increase in appetite when they came off too. Now that I think about it, my weight gain was pretty gradual at the beginning and then dramatic at the end (so perhaps related to nrts?) Fortunately, I think my metabolism is levelling out too. Smoking does speed up your metabolism so when you quit thimgs slow down for a a while and we put on weight.It DOES turn around though in time. Hi Lindak, You know it takes time. I quit at the end of summer, before I knew it all the food holidays were around. I had gained over 30 pds in about 4 months. At the first of year I started watching my food intake. trying not to eat huge portions, only eating veggies or fruit for snacks. Having half cup cereal and coffee for breakfast. Keeping busy and almost completely eliminating sweets. They are my downfall. Just by doing this I lost 18pds in about 2 months. Keep at it. Your quit is the most important. Remember if your can quit smoking you can do anything. I appreciate how hard the whole diet and exercise is now. Who knew eating healthy and light exercise could be demanding..You are doing great.
