Drinking more beer with quitting

Wow -- some pretty strong responses here. As usual, I'm in the same boat with my old buddy Dunedude --- I didn't touch liquor for a couple of weeks into my quit, and I do find that now I'm using it to quiet some of the craves. Spouse wants to lose a bunch of weight; it's a good time for me to join/support her in cutting way back on drinking. It's all good --- peteg My Milage: My Quit Date: 10/30/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 104 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 5,215 Amount Saved: $572 Life Gained: Days: 19 Hrs: 1 Mins: 9 Seconds: 34

Just thought I'd let you all know that I went over to the alcohol help center and it's a real eye-opening experience for anyone like me, who along with so many others, had a nerve hit by Dunedude. Suffice it to say that I've already signed up; it's a really friendly, non-judgemental place. No one is in your face about quitting drinking right now, and I've been there twice already today, and no one has called me any names. It's not like checking into the Betty Ford clinic or anything... if you're interested, I can keep you posted, but it's probably better for you to check it out on your own. peteg, who is really glad no one is making him stop drinking just yet; he has this certain bachlorette party to attend! 2 days no beer. I don't feel bad. It must be alot like quitting smoking and triggers that the smoking habit has. There has been times that I would normally grab a beer. But I didnt. I am learning a little about myself this way I guess. I really should check out the sister site for alcohol it would probably put things into perspective, I just havn't had time. Nipping this in the bud feels right though, if only I had the good sense to do that when I was 15 years old about smoking..."good sense at 15 years old"??? lol theres the quote of the month. Off to work I go My Milage: My Quit Date: 11/7/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 99 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,985 Amount Saved: $485.1 Life Gained: Days: 14 Hrs: 11 Mins: 13 Seconds: 12

Ok, so I quit drinking during the work week. I went 5 days without beer. It wasn't easy but i did it. Here I am at the weekend trying now not over indulge. It is going well, but I just have to put thought into it. Maybe that has been the problem, with smoking and other problems, I put my life in cruise control and just smoked and just drank without even thinking about it. I , however can't wait for the day that I don't think about thinking about smoking or drinking (make sense??) I know the will come.....I have heard it usually is on a Tuesday, huh Phil? Thank you all for your support---Kevin(dune) My Milage: My Quit Date: 11/7/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 103 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 2,078 Amount Saved: $504.7 Life Gained: Days: 15 Hrs: 3 Mins: 27 Seconds: 27

Everyone here has very valid points. Stubborn I think you hit the nail on the head (I hope). I think right now when I grab a beer my brain misfiring I don't know if I am craving cigs or beer. This week is going to be my gauge of what is going on, I am not going to drink during the week. I am going to see what/where the problem is (if any). This post was a hard one to write and put out there, however I havnt seen a problem like this, and I knew I wasn't alone. Thanks for all your input and encouragement. Oh by the way, when I said:
So I guess I will embark on bearing another cross, this seems to be my year to do so....
I meant that in a self cleansing kind of way. You see I turned 40 this year and I quit smoking and I am making changes in my life to increase/sustain quality of life. This drinking thing is something that has kind of snuck up on me over the last few months, and it is something that I realise must be dealth with. Wish me luck this week.......I think I will switch to drinking more water (something I need to do) or I don't know.... dusting?? Auntdeb: I was with you when you said I was a big boy and intelligent but I got completely lost when you called me a crybaby....LOL. I dig tough love and know that is spirit in which you mean it. Now this is a recent problem I have been privvy too, I did notice this early in my quit, however I did not want to through anything more into the mix and went with the flow. I know I am not a rip roaring fall down drunk, I have on average 4-6 beers in a 4-8 hour period, after work. So I never get drunk, I feel I must be clear on that fact, I do have kids that I am here for. I am the coach of the softball team afterall. Auntdeb you are asking me dig REAL deep, no-one has ever asked me to dig THAT deep, and I think that kind of diggin will have to wait till the kids are grown. ...Also please don't ask if I am "man enough" That is hitting where my manhood signature is. (below the belt). I am a man in all sense of the word...Father, husband, buddy ...in that order. I work hard at that.....Again I know the spirit for which you mean it, though. I just had to say it. Windy: Thank you for sharing your observation with me, I have never seen a post about the replacement of one bad habit for another and thought I'd start this one. It is wierd how this played out in my quit though. Now windy everytime I see your post I am going to visualise a table dancer.!! Before I quit I drank a beer or two everyday, occasionally I went a day or two without. At the beginning of my quit I guess I should say it appears one of my coping mechanisms was grabbing a beer...feel like a smoke? grab a beer.. At first I thought "how cool I can drink and not smoke" .. But now I drink about 5-6 beers everyday!! My wife is beginning to call me an alcoholic, and I guess by definition I am. I guess the purpose of this post is to see if others are experiencing what I am right now, and if not look out for it!! We are all predispositioned to be addicted to something hence the term "addictive personality" So I guess I will embark on bearing another cross, this seems to be my year to do so.... Hi Dune I haven't started drinking on a regular basis but I have discovered that when I drink, I drink WAY more than I usually do. Although I haven't been dancing on any tables yet, it has worried me a little. It seems that since I am accustomed to smoking when I drink that I have replaced smoking with drinking more. I probably only drink a couple times a month but I haven't discovered a solution yet.... I do find that I am craving some of those things that aren't good for me (i.e. more coffee if I am lacking energy, a drink when I feel edgy in a social situation, etc) It would be really easy to become too dependent on these things...Guess I'm going to have to watch myself too. * When I quit smoking, I also quit drinking! :) However, I tend to drink more coffee and eat more spicy, hot chilli stuff! :( Cheers, NMC My Milage: My Quit Date: 8/25/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 171 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,719 Amount Saved: $855 Life Gained: Days: 32 Hrs: 15 Mins: 52 Seconds: 48
