Tomorrow is the day

Hi smithmi, Tomorrow I will be up at 4:00 am. My husband has to catch a flight an hour away at 6. Actually I've been waking up around 4-ish anyway. I'll be wishing you strength those first few hours of the day. If you happen upon this message before you go to sleep. Stop here and save the rest til morning. I hope it's a beautiful morning for you. I used to work early in the am. when i covered several dialysis centers. I could go to work as soon as I happened to wake up. I loved driving as the sun rose. Inccidently (sp?) at that time I didn't smoke. I was about half way into my 11 year quit. I'm thinking of you by the time you read this. Be free. Good morning. Oddly enough my SSC inspirational e-mail is about headaches today: "About one quarter of smokers report a mild headache at some time during the process of quitting. A headache may last a day, go away, and return a week later. How long will this last? These headaches may occur during the first week to two weeks after quitting. Tips to help: Take a warm bath or shower. Cut down on caffeine and colas. Try relaxation or meditation techniques. If headaches persist make sure to contact your family doctor. The Stop Smoking Center Support Team" You mentioned not drinking coffee right now and drinking hot chocolate. Do you normally drink more coffee? Caffeine withdrawal can also give a headache. You are unquestionably in withdrawal today and your body's gonna go nuts. Having something in your mouth (other than a cigarette) helps. Hang in there! Hi smithmi, Good luck to you in your efforts to quit. I've been a smoker for well over 40 years myself. It's not easy to give the habit, and hasn't been easy for any of us here, but if we've managed to stop and maintain our quits, you can see that you will be able to do it too. To accomplish the things you've done, you must be a very strong person. Now you must be strong for yourself. You know you can do it! It is strange to find yourself in a situation where you would ordinarily light up, and you can't always avoid them, but you can just not smoke. Take your break or go outside at your normal times and just breathe fresh air. I found it best to try to disrupt the normal pattern of my life as little as possible. I hope to see you posting often here too. It really does seemed to help me when I tried to be supportive of others. I think it was a matter of having extra opportunities to write out affirmations of my intentions. :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 11/16/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 21 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 643 Amount Saved: $105 Life Gained: Days: 2 Hrs: 20 Mins: 37 Seconds: 51

Welcome, smith! First, thanks for everything you do for your community as a first responder; not an easy job! Second, congratulations on your decision to become smoke-free -- I'm sure you'll find it a wise move. I hope you'll be able to concentrate on the immediate -- specifically, the minute-by-minute -- ramifications of your quit more than the eternal. It's much easier to take the long view than to battle the addiction in the moment; likewise, it's easier to picture an eternity of being able to fix whatever harm we did to our families while purusing our addictions. We don't have eternity to get it right; we have this moment to choose to put the needs of others in front of our own needs. I admire that you do that in your professional life, and respect that you are doing it in your personal life. Keep it in the present. peteg My Milage: My Quit Date: 10/30/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 36 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,819 Amount Saved: $198 Life Gained: Days: 6 Hrs: 8 Mins: 47 Seconds: 35

Not a whine at all, Mike! A wonderful feat and achievement! You had the thing in your hand -- you could have lit it, but you didn't. That is a cause for great celebration. (If I have learned anything over the past several weeks, it's to take the good stuff as it comes and not sweat the bad stuff.) peteg My Milage: My Quit Date: 10/30/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 38 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,921 Amount Saved: $209 Life Gained: Days: 6 Hrs: 17 Mins: 22 Seconds: 9

Just got onto this post....smitty you are doing the right thing..I was just where you are a month ago...thats it, just a month....go day by day and you will be here soon! minute by minute if needed ....every crave you pass (and store) makes you closer to freedom. Btw..Like pete said nohing but respect for you 1st responders! I had "cedar fire" In my neck of the woods (so cal) 3 years ago. Fire was just east of us....crew heading toward fire at beginning (took the time) rode up and down our street sounding siren (at 2 am)...by 3 am 1st house was burning on our street.....If it wasn't for this crew heading to origin of fire, the outcome would have been diferent. (as the fire traveled west from us, it killed 15 people, and burned over 450 square miles. Cigarettes Not Smoked

17 years ago 0 738 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Welcome Smithmi and well met! Good morning to you! I hope that this morning finds you calm and focused. I will tell you that I smoked for 40+ years, and if I can do it with the help of all these wonderful folks here, then you can too! The key is your attitude toward the quit; you fight the addiction not the quit. And if your determination to quit is stronger than your desire to smoke, then you will do this without a doubt. Do stay in the present though, it's really important not to get too strung out on "forever" and "never" and the like. I can do the "what if" string for days, but if I just breathe and center myself and turn it over to my higher power (God) then it's almost easy. Simple, really, when you think about it. N.O.P.E. = Not One Puff Ever!
