from your 'what could have been' thread:
Well, I was curious how far along I would have been if I hadn't reset my meter, so I went in and adjusted, just to see where I would have been, and low and behold... today would have been 300 days for me. You'd think this would have made me happy, but a pang of overwhelming saddness fell over me because I threw that quit away. I'm not trying to have a pity party... I don't feel sorry for myself at all because I did this to myself... it was a choice and I am living with the consequences of this choice, but I do have a little bit of remorse for the quit that died nearly 6 months ago. I'm posting this as a warning for anyone who is thinking about "slipping" or might "slip." Resetting your meter has consequences. If you relapse or smoke and reset your meter, you will forever have to live with the consequences of that action. I do not wish this on anyone. I know that I have a lot to be proud of and believe me, I am proud. But a part of me wishes that I had 300 days on my meter today, instead of the 160 something days it has now. I'm not saying this to discourage anyone who has reset their meters because quitting after a slip or relapse IS possible... I believe that I am living proof of that. But my goal is to prevent people from doing what I did. If I can help just one person not make the same mistake I did, then all of this will be worth it. Pam, I agree with imallclear...get rid of that pack. Your junkie brain is still trying to get control with all those rationalizations "I won't smoke them, I promise...just in case I want to destroy them, blah, blah, blah." That's the addiction talking...stinking thinking. There are much healthier ways to take your frustrations out. Do you think it's a good idea for a recovering alcoholic to keep a bottle of scotch around? Or how about a recovering crack addict? They should keep some crack around? I don't think so, and I don't think you will either, if you open your eyes. It's time to get on with the rest of your life and leave addiction behind.
I feel as though if I run back to my addiction, I will see pretty quickly why I wanted to quit, but this time, it won't be me wanting to quit for 3 weeks to get rid of a cough, it will be me wanting to quit for LIFE! And then I can get back to the quit and not question it again.
And what if you don't? What if you keep trying and keep trying and end up like me at age 55 finally getting it? What if you don't and you end up at age 39 with cigarette wrinkles all around your lips and a hoarse, deep voice like a middle-aged woman who's smoked all her life? What if you have to go through this quitting thing over and over and over again like so many of us have done? And what if you finally get to the point where you don't have another quit in you and you just give up? Pam, obviously we all care very much about you and we hate to see you make such a terrible mistake. As I often do, I'm going to suggest that you get some talking therapy to sort out why you are feeling so self-destructive and perhaps help you figure out the best road ahead for you. And how is it "greener over there", Pam? Do you think that you are too young to get cancer or emphesema? Do you think that you won't smell really horrible like smokers do? Do you think smoking will help you swim better? Do you think that you really won't suffer guilt and regret if you start smoking again? You want to share the smoking experience with your boyfriend, Pam? How romantic...two junkies quitting their addiction together. Sorry, Pam. I hope you don't make a really terrible mistake. But if you do, remember that it's your choice either way. A constant cough which caused concern amongst co-workers and bosses led Butterfly Swimmer to quit. The cough lasted eight months and the various prescriptions from her doctor did not work. You're young butterfly yet you had a smokers cough that worried you and your friends. Not good if you also want to experience being older. I thought I was doomed to be a smoker for the rest of my life and be stuck in relapse hell forever! She realised that she could do it and only had two options: She could either smoke for the rest of her life or make a final quit. Dead right. Smoke and you'll be in relapse hell forever, you understood perfectly 'either smoke for the rest of you life or stick with your quit. Dont allow yourself to smoke that first one. Understand that the craving or tough time in your life will pass and smoking will not help. Your advice is sound Butterfly 'Don't smoke that first one'. Go back to basics if you have to butterfly and take it one day at a time. Smoking is such a pointless, expensive and soul destroying activity and you deserve better. Hey Pam, Please poke in and let us know how you are doing when you are ready. There is no shame in being honest about what is going on in your life and how you are feeling. I guarantee that you are not the only one who has ever hit a tough patch even after a year. You certainly aren't the only one who has hung out with smokers and we've all rationalized smoking to one degree or another. Be well and please don't smoke. Wow Pam. Try to step back from these feelings for a bit and re-read your post as if someone else wrote it. What would you say to that person? My first thought is to pull up some of your old posts from your early days to see what you've overcome. Also, try to visualize yourself a day or two after you lit up again. Imagine the feelings of loss you would have and the deep sense of regret. You are young and of course could quit again later but just like school, your quit is an investment in your future. The benefits of quitting before the age of 30 are tremendous and what an amazing gift you've given yourself. How many times have you heard "I wish I had quit years ago?" If an 18 year old told you they were going to start smoking because they were young, how would that argument sound to you? The smokers around you probably hold within them the desire to quit - at least on some level. By your example you may not realise it but you are proving to them it can be done. They may not voice this but I have to believe it is true. After your boyfriend finishes a cigarette, wait about 2 minutes and then smell his clothes and his "smoking" hand. Big whiffs. There is no romance in that nastiness. Yuck. Don't smoke, stay close and look forward to the better days - they will come.
