When i wake I have painful teeth - but I figured that I have been grinding them in my sleep (a common occurrence for me apparently). Maybe it is a withdrawal symptom instead? Sleep disturbance is a common withdrawal symptom, whether using patches or not, but from a previous quit I can assure you that sleep does return to normal eventually! Karen, The best solution to sensitive teeth and gums is guess what? "Baking Soda and Salt"...no kidding This treatment is used by some Dentist as an alternative to surgery too. The baking soda is a non-abraasive cleaner, and the salt helps heal and toughen the gums. I used to subscribe to an Alternative Health News Letter. I'm in the process of home whitening my teeth with whitestrips and know that the consequences will be sensitive teeth, but I have my baking soda/salt combo for back-up to combat when I need to. I use Kosher Salt (the kind used to rim margaritas (you can find it in the grocery store). Often when we smoked, the toxins in the cig's were masking ailments and now at day 10 many of the toxins are leaving your body and the blood flow has increased thereby causing your teeth to be more sensitive? Unsure of the real answer.. but if you already have gum problems etc., it may be a good idea to see your dentist if it persists. There's also a toothpaste, Sensodyne which has helped my friend out a lot for her sensitive teeth. I had to stop drinking any fluids about 2-3 hrs before bed because I was up and down to the washroom all night long. You're having a marvelous quit! Stay strong! I definitely agree with the increased blood flow theory. Because I've also heard it said after you've been quit a week or two, your scalp becomes awfully sensitive. In fact, I've experienced that. It hurts when you brush your hair. My two cents worth. Karen, I have always had bad teeth. Grew up with well water, no fluoride. So my teeth are not in good shape. After I quit, my gums were bleeding bad. I recently went to dentist for cleaning. She told me when you smoke it constricts the blood vessels in our gums. Making them look pink and healthy. Masking other problems. When we quit those vessels are now freed. So all that junk that had built up is also freed. She told me to brush as often as I could, like 3 or 4 time a day. To floss as much as I could too. Also go get a check up with the next 100 days. They might recommend more. Mine recommended a electric toothbrush. The good news. This is all a healing process. My gums and teeth are starting to look and feel much better. Even better than before I quit smoking. My dentist said with 6 months to a year my teeth will be healthier than they have ever been. For now we have to take extra care of our teeth. OK, I am not sure if this is a withdrawl symptom or not, but lately my teeth have become extremely sensitive. I do suffer from receding gums and sensitivity is nothing new to me. But since I quit smoking, it seems to have gotten worst. I have started rinsing weekly with a flouride rinse, as suggested by my dentist. I was just wondering if anyone else had this problem and if it could be related to the quit. I am also having a very hard time sleeping through the night. I have increased my water intake, so that's most likely the culprit. I try not to drink too much in the hour before I go to sleep, but I'm still waking up every hour or two to use the washroom, at least three times thoughout the night. I am hoping this goes away soon, or I may have to decrease the amount of water I take in through the day and I don't really want to do that. Currently, I am having the recommended 6 - 8 glasses....I think. As Josie said, your dentist should be your guide. If your gums are receding and tender, you might not want to be putting the abrasiveness of salt onto them. Sensodyne works great for sensitive teeth, and the dentist will have other recommendations. Mine gave me a solution of Peridex (chlorhexidine) which is an antibacterial rinse. It reduces gum irritation. Meanwhile, congratulations on 10 great days!
