I smoked last night!

17 years ago 0 26 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
I'm using the same OB as I did with my daughter. I took a pregnancy test and I got a faint positive line, but it's a little early to tell for sure. My OB said do not use NRT, because it would go directly to embryo and has something to do with nervous system development. She said cigs are safer, but I need to quit just tapper off. I got down to 3 a day with my daughter, but never stopped. I want to quit this time for myself and my children. Thanks for all the help. I set my quit date and I have begun tappering off. I know I can do this.

I smoked last night! I am very disappointed in myself. I also think I am pregnant, so I can't quit cold turkey. When I was pregnant with my daughter my OB told me to ween myself down gradually so it didn't stress the baby. I set a new quit date for March the 10th, is that enough time to ween my self gradually? I am limiting my self to 5 cigs a day and then next week i'm going to go down to 3. I hope this works. I have to do this! Thanks for the support. Thanks for all the encouraging words. I am an emotional wreck today, so thats probably why I took everything so hard. Trying to quit smoking and not knowing if I'm pregnant or not is about all I can handle. We've been wanting another child for 3 years and the negative test I got this morning really upset me. I have an appointment for Monday, so I will know for sure then. I have made up my mind to quit and I will, no matter what the results. I have to quit for myself, before I can quit for anyone else. I will keep you all posted and I will continue the fight for my freedom from nicotine. I took another pregnency test this morning and it said negative so I am not sure If I am pregnant or not. To all the people who are saying just flush them down the toliet, just quit, believe me when I say I am trying. I have never been able to just put them down no matter how much I wanted to. Pregnant or not I am quitting, I followed the advice of my OB because she is a doctor, and she told me to tapper off and then quit. She said do it in the first month and things would be fine. I understand you are trying to make me want to quit, but making me feel like a terrible person isn't going to do it. I joined this group for support, because this is the hardest thing I have ever tried to do in my life and I need emptional support. I know smoking isn't good for the baby, if there is one, but I knew it wasn't good for my daughter either and I still smoked with her. I am not proud of that and I feel guilty everyday, but I have an addiction that I have to break. I am sticking with my quit date of the 10th, and I am weening myself down. I am not going to use a NRT or pill. I can do this, but I do need support, not to be criticized. I think poorly enough about myself, I don't need anyone else to tell me. Please don't misunderstand, I do want to quit and I do want ya'll to support me, just maybe not so harsh next time. I'm actually crying at work. Good luck to you DJ. Think about the baby and that will help. I was lucky my two kids came out ok. I smoked with both of them. I never really thought about the dangers 30 years ago. Stay strong. It's not easy but this site has real good reading!!! I haven't been here to long and I have learned so much. One day at a time ;) My Milage: My Quit Date: 2/19/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 10 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 482 Amount Saved: $120 Life Gained: Days: 1 Hrs: 5 Mins: 56 Seconds: 37

DJ, Please don't be too hard on yourself mentally. I know you realize you should quit....but understand also that you are addicted to a very bad drug. I watched my daughter smoke through two pregnacys. My grandaughters are fine. (thank goodness). Her OB would have prefered her to quit...but knowing that many cannot she told her to smoke "as little as possible". Meaning only a few. Her husband rationed them. Ironically she quit after the birth of her second child. She quit for 98 days and then blew it. She is quiting again. I know she holds much quilt for smoking while pregnant. Know I understand and care and am behind you in your being convinced you should quit. Now you have a WONDERFUL reason to quit. Sometimes it is easier to quit for reasons like you now have...than to quit for ourselves. Dj, smoking during pregnancy is about the same as being a smoker.....most of us picked up the habit in our teens and are now in our late 20's, late 30's, late 40's and so on. And for the most part we are okay. But every so often we hear about someone or may know them personally who goes to the doctor with a cough, and they are dying in hospice three months later at age 32. and we all say why??? yet the fact that they smoked is pretty glaringly obvious. whatever you do, don't beat yourself up. I have a five year old son. I smoked when I was pregnant. My OB, who happens to be a very good OB in my area (well known) told me that basically I will have a smaller baby and that is about it. He told me ya it is not good for or the baby and of course you should quit...but if you don't more than likely everything will be fine. It only becomes a major issue if you have some sort of complication. My son is fine. But I still feel guilty.....when he was an infant I don't think I ever slept... I always had the monitor right to my ear, or if I was up I was checking on him every couple of minutes... (always worrying about SIDS). I feel embarrassed when people occasionally find out that I smoked during pregnancy. And now.... I worry that I will wind up dying of cancer 5 years from now and leave him orphaned. I wish I could have been at a point in my life and given it up back then, but as an addict...I just wasn't ready yet. I am hopeful that there will be no other price to pay for my nasty little 20 year addiction. But more importantly that my son does not pay any price. If you are ready you will stop, you get to decide. but don't beat yourself up.....it is not worth it. We are all human, with all of our mistakes, shortcomings, and the such. I am sure you are a big girl,(age) you know the risks. Take care of yourself, and hang out with people who love you.
