Congrats for taking that step, FQ! It takes great courage to do the quit, and to admit you need some help, too. I think this site is absolutely THE BOMB! You can always find someone here who knows something about whatever you are experiencing. I think you are doing the right thing, getting an appt. I work in psych, and so often people think " I should just pull myself together" when in reality, depression is a physical chemical imbalance, and guess what smoking does? Gives you some of those chemicals. A lot of people discover smoking was masking the depression. Amazing, what you learn here.... Congrats for your now 33 days of smobriety, too! I think counselling is a great idea. I'm dealing with depression at the moment as well. Not quite as pronounced as the other day. I say go for it! Cheers, Jan

I go to see one for a family problem but we talk about how I deal with life now. I smoked for half my life dealt with problems by going out and smoking, I am happy I smoke, stress smoke..you know the drill. But he helps look at my different feelings and how to deal with them. You have to do what it right for you!! I am also on Lexapro and that helps, but SSRI's are not for everyone either. Do what you need to do to stay quit!!!! Smoking was so intertwined with my lifestyle that quitting has effected all my relationships and my reaction to events. It's kind of like divorcing an abusive spouse! Private or group counseling is a great idea. Besides addressing depression, it can teach us emotional coping skills ... because let's face it ... smoking is not a healthy coping skill to have. It masks emotional issues instead of facing them and dealing with them. As we have been told many times here at SSC, smoking masks underlying problems/issues. It is not uncommon for people to realize that they have been battling depression for some time ... they just didn't realize it because smoking was masking their depression. Seek counseling. Learn new emotional coping skills. It will help you with your quit. It will help you with your life. Final, I went that route in the beginning thinking my husband and I needed marriage counseling. Well We quit 6/7/06 and we started counseling the end of that month. Things got worse and worse and August my husband started smoking again. I continued with counseling myself and last week was put on lexapro (antidepressant) and let me tell you, it has made a world of difference. I wasnt' allowing myself to go through the "mourning" period (when I stopped smoking). I am doing much better and it helps to vent to my counselor. My hubby and I still need counseling because he leaves his smokes around and well, too much temptation every day for that. Plus he smells (lol had to put a smile on my face typing that). Everyone's quit is different but I wished I had gone on these a heck of a lot earlier than I did. Hugs and do what you feel is right for YOU!!! I am in Canada and in Ontario each hospital that I have been to in the past two years has groups that meet to help kick the habit. Check it out in you area, your lung associationor heart and stroke association will be able to offer clues. I happen to go to CAMH a local mental health and addiction specialty hospital, and they have a whole stop smoking unit with wonderful face to face counsellors and a staff that are very willing to help. And it is all covered by my health insurance. I go to a live stop smoking group. Live, once a week. There are quitters from no days to 5 years in this group. The group has been very helpful. I get to see others and hear of what is going on with them and I get to relate or not, I get to see pitfalls and ways around. Very similar to this internet group. There is however, something about being face to face with someone, hearing their story or experience and feeling in relationship with them. It is also in a very nonjudgemental forum and the facilitator is very good at keeping the group focused on quitting smoking and there is no room for interpersonal issues or conflict. So I have seen individual smoking cessation counsellors and gone to this live group. It has helped and it has offered another layer of protection and reassurance. What ever works.
