Did You Know?

The unemployment rate of persons with serious mental illness reflects these obstacles and has been commonly reported to range from 70-90%, depending on the severity of the disability.  These statistics are particularly disturbing in light of the fact that productive work has been identified as a leading component in promoting positive mental health and in paving the way for a rich and fulfilling life in the community.

Access to meaningful, paid work is a basic human right for every citizen, and those who experience serious mental illness should have equal access to the fundamental elements of citizenship which include: housing, education, income and work. This means that each individual has the right to be employed in a mainstream job, rather than being labeled as a client in a training program or a sheltered workshop.

flying/planes

Georgie,

This fear of flying is very normal! Members, can you share some of your experiences on planes?

It is important to do exposure exercises but you have to do them within your comfort zone. You need to be the judge if this is something that will push you too far out of your comfort zone. Consider all of your options and the costs and benefits of going on this trip. Will this advance your career? Is this a good option to gain exposure to flying? Can you challenge your anxious thoughts during the flight? You can also talk to your doctor about medications that you can use to help you deal with your anxiety while flying.

Members, please offer your input.

medication or not?

Cael,

Our members should be around shortly to discuss their experience with medication.

We encourage you to talk to your doctor as he/she knows what's best for you and will be able to help you make the best decisions for your situation.

Have you started to work through the sessions yet?

Did You Know?

As the summer approaches and the warm weather arrives your focus and attention may get thrown off a little. This can disrupt your professional and personal life dramatically.  Routines can be lost and your goals can be forgotten. It’s important to prepare yourself for the changes ahead to ease the transition.

Continue to work on your weekly sessions, practice exposure exercises and have some coping strategies ready for all times. Don’t let a change in routine ketch you off guard.

Another setback , tut !

Koneko,

Continue to challenge these negative thoughts. Ask yourself the questions that Danielle has posted.

If eating usually helps you stay focused, then try to stay on track with your eating. Members, please offer some other suggestions to help stay positive and focused.

Are you 'Accomodating your anxiety?'

DB,

Maybe it's time to talk to your doctor about how you feel with her treatment or seek a new doctor that will help you with other methods than just medication.

It's important to have a good, trusting relationship with your doctor.

Members, have you ever had a similar experience with your doctor?

hello!

Gloria,

You can also try asking yourself the 10 questions to help challenge your thoughts. Next time you are feeling anxious ask yourself:
  1. What’s the evidence that the thought is true?
  2. What’s the evidence that the thought is not true?
  3. What is the worst possible thing that could happen and how would you cope if it did happen?
  4. What’s the best possible thing that could happen?
  5. What would most likely happen and how would you cope if that happened?
  6. What’s another way of thinking about this situation? What else could be going on?
  7. What would you tell a friend of yours if they were in this situation and had the same negative thought?
  8. What’s the effect of believing the negative thought?
  9. What would happen if you didn’t believe the negative thought?
  10. What are some alternative thoughts in this situation?
You may be surprised with some of the answers.

It's also good to keep a journal and track all of your symptoms, the length of time they were present, what brought them on, how they went away, etc. so you can start to understand your panic.

No need to read, just doing some major venting...

Diva,

We're sorry to hear that may not get financial help next year. Keep on doing some research and see if there are any avenues that you haven't tried yet.
