Why is this time so much harder?

Hi madwall, for me day 4 was the hardest. During my first week I can remember having a king sized hissy fit right here in the community and luckily a lot of people came to my rescue to remind me of how important this quit is to me and to give me pointers. I really sympathize with where you are now and can only say that if you can just hang on and do whatever it takes to survive "hell week" or the first seven days you'll find that the intensity of the withdrawal will begin to ease up for you. The craves won't necessarily end but they will become much more manageable with time. Spend as much time as you can reading here, drink lots of water and chew on mints or straws or whatever will ease the intensity for you and get you past the crave. Some of the best advice I've gotten here was to remember to "gentle down" and be kind to myself during this quit... (thanks healerwithin) You really need to do that now - Quitting is hard work but you can do this - if I can do it anyone can. I'm cheering for you - hang on! Getting Ready for Tomorrow!!!

Kendall, Don't be so hard on yourself. I've been exactly where you are and most people here can relate to how you're feeling right now. I'm glad that you've already set a new date, a new plan of action and have the right attitude for moving forward. I've relied on coffee stir sticks to help me with this quit and I discovered by accident that if I sip a bit of the hot coffee or tea thru the stir stick it gives me an odd sense of comfort. Maybe in the back of my mind the hot coffee being sucked thru the stir stick reminds me of the smoking sensation... I'm not sure what it is but I don't try to examine it too closely. I'm just thankful for any relief I find in whatever form it comes. Take care of yourself - you can do this! Look whos 60!!!!

Congratulations Angelic! If you can remember, would you tell me what the major differences for you are now that you're at 60 days as compared to when you were at 30 days? I guess what I'm asking is - how much better can I hope to feel in another 30 days? :) YAY YOU! "Dunlap" disease

I can sooooo relate - I've probably got at least 10 pounds on me that were caused soley by a love for ice cream. :) My latest ice cream crave has been lime and/or orange sherbert... I seem to be craving anything with a tart taste... and, yes I love the drumsticks too! Since quitting smoking I'm increased my workouts just to compensate for all the extra calories... I've still gained a few pounds but imo it was worth it just to finally give up the smokes! I can use your help please

Well, I'm happy to say that I survived the trip smokefree! I had to leave so early Tuesday a.m. that I didn't have time to sit and read and post here so I printed off all your comments while I was finishing getting ready to leave for the airport. It was GREAT to have your words to read on the plane and I read them again several times while I was on the trip... I was amazed by what a comfort it was to have a "part" of this place with me. :) I wasn't able to get with my girlfriends as planned (unexpected events) but I think that that is just as well because I don't think I'm quite ready for that trigger... I know they would have agreed to not smoke if we had been together but it would have really bothered me to know that they would have been wishing they could light up... so, it all worked out. I do feel a little stronger every day so I think I'll be ready for that challenge by the time I see them in July. Thanks again to everyone - this place is soooooo awesome!

Trapped!

Cass, Do whatever you have to do to get thru the next few days. If your quit is like most you're in the worst part now and it will last for a couple more days before it starts to ease up. The good news is that it really does get easier. The thoughts may stay with you for a while but the intensity of the craves will start to lessen after the first week. Take it one minute or five minutes or one second at a time... whatever you have to do. Visit and read here as often as you can. You'll find lots of support here.
