Starting a new Habit of not smoking

Hi wagtail- Congratulations on two days of a new beginning. You are on your way and you should be very proud. I am new to this and I know how hard the first days are. You sound very positive and that is great. It may not be that way every day; some days are very very hard. I hope your journey goes as well as your first two days. Good for you wagtail :) ;) Denisey My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/14/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 7 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 142 Amount Saved: $35 Life Gained: Days: 0 Hrs: 15 Mins: 21 Seconds: 40

New to site, but trying to quit again

What a great group of quitters is right! I thank God(although not religious)everytime I come here and feel better that I found all of you. I am one not usually to get emotional but I already have been humbled to tears a dozen times by reading all of your posts and responses to others trying to get through the struggle. As for me, my reward for a week is up in the air right now... thanks every one. As for anyone undecided about coming here, please take my word for it, I give this site a huge percentage of the credit for me not smoking in these days. After 25+ years of smoking...wow! Smoking and Pain

Hi Pixie19, Good for you for setting your quit date despite your pain. I am a chronic pain sufferer with endometrios and a back injury from my days as a gymnast. I know what you mean about the pain meds and the increase in wanting to smoke. I worried about the exact same thing. Here is what I found out: the pain wont change in it's level because you arent smoking and yes, pain meds will make the cravings worse. Rusty is right, not smoking will help you exercise more and guess what? It does decrease the pain. It isn't signifigant enough to get rid of it, but it does certainly help. When I take the pain meds, I grab a straw and bite on it or come to this website and madly type away. We cant keep smoking because of pain especially if like me, you don't have a life threatening problem, just a pain problem- that most of the time, makes you wish you were dead :) U know what I mean dont you? I used to think that when I was in pain by smoking I would relieve it. Now I understand it was just another excuse to light another smoke! Keep that date. Prepare ahead of time. Get support here, and practice slow deep breathing. If you close your eyes, sometimes, you can almost convince yourself that you are smoking. Pain is a reality a lot of us have to deal with on an ongoing basis--dont let it be an excuse to help keep smoking when quitting is really healthier. Good luck Pixie19, we are all here for you when the time comes. I know you must be strong after all you have suffered. Maybe this will be easier than some of your pain episodes. U made it thru those, you can make it as a non-smoker. I did and U can 2!!! ;) Denisey My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/14/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 6 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 135 Amount Saved: $30 Life Gained: Days: 0 Hrs: 14 Mins: 40 Seconds: 55

New to site, but trying to quit again

obrmom, I havent confessed this to anyone but here goes-I snuck ciggarettes with both of my pregnancies. Ironically, I conceived two miracle babies through invitro fertilization. How ashamed I was to be putting them at risk after all my husband and I had been through going through infertility treatments. I told myself quitting would be more stressful to the fetus than smoking! I remember hiding in my basement re-lighting the same cig 5 times in one day! I was mortified by my behavior but couldnt stop myself. I even remember being glad that I couldnt breastfeed my daughter so that my ciggs would be more guilt-free and enjoyable. I hate telling this but feel I should. I just want to show you and I guess, everyone else how I am no different than any of you. I went through countless procedures, heartaches, etc in a quest to be pregnant and the one given-that smoking interferes with conception, couldnt make me stop :( I have never told my friends, family or husband because I know that they would be SO disappointed in me. It only gets worse, when my daughter was three and had a seizure and had to be rushed to the hospital in an ambulance, do you know what I was thinking? "Grab your smokes, you dont want to be at the hospital where there is nowhere to buy any." I yelled at my husband who was getting in the car as we were leaving in the ambulance "grab my cigarettes". He didnt do it and I remember after I knew my daughter would be fine, bumming a smoke from a homeless guy out front of the hospital who only had 2 smokes- but felt bad for me. How pathetic is that? I have more stories than these and this is probably the only time I will confess to them but wanted you to know you are not alone. Good luck :) Denisey My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/14/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 6 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 137 Amount Saved: $30 Life Gained: Days: 0 Hrs: 14 Mins: 48 Seconds: 40

Day 5ers How we doing?

Relapser, Only a couple of days ahead of you! We are doing it arent we? Good for you. I have had some weird symptoms. One I havent seen except once here; sore jaw. My coworker said it is probably clenching in my sleep or some sort of thing like that. I agree with Brentw1(gotta admit, he is one heck of a guy!)change your name, at least to be more positive :) Denisey My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/14/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 6 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 136 Amount Saved: $30 Life Gained: Days: 0 Hrs: 14 Mins: 46 Seconds: 52

Today I turned 40 and quit smoking

Hi everyone, I turned 40 today and quit smoking. Since my ten year old daughter was about four years old whenever she got on my case about smoking, I would reply "I will quit when I am 40". I guess I figured by giving her a date she would stop hassling me. I figured that I would accomplish this somehow but since it was in the future, who cared? I decided I needed to keep my promise to my daughter and that even if this is hard-I am quitting for me too and not to forget that. Today I had a few moments of being really edgy but I dealt with it. This is going to get worse before it gets better I am sure.
