I remember the first time I noticed that I could smell my smoking friends before I could see them. There's nothing like that feeling of satisfaction knowing you will no longer smell like that.
After you quit, you may start to discover that you and your smoking co-workers don't seem as close as you used to. This happens for two reasons: 1. You find out that you really didn't have anything in common after all except smoking; and, 2. Your still-smoking friends probably think about quitting all the time. They probably have friends and family members wishing they would quit. So, when you quit, it will most likely make them feel guilty for not quitting too and ashamed that they think they are too weak to quit. In the end, if your friendship is real, it will survive the temporary strain.
And in the meantime, just look at all the virtual-friends you have right here. Come on by, post, tell us all about it. Chances are, most of us have been there and believe it or not, you can help someone else who may be on the fence about quitting.
It's really not that hard once you realize that you can't quit smoking until you stop smoking. It's all down hill from there.
Cold Turkeys don't smoke, okay? It's bad for us.

"Monkey on his/her back" has been a euphemism for addiction in this country for many years:
From the Dictionary of American Slang, 1960:
"monkey on [one's] back" refers to drug addiction; considered to be an excessive burden of financial, physical, and/or mental responsibility; the drug habit; lit., a strong addiction that one spends most of one's energy to support. --Common addict use, now universally known: i.e. When without drugs an addict feels weighted down and depressed and when buying drugs an addict is supporting pushers and his drug habit, thus, fig., the addict carries an extra burden; it may be a large or small monkey--some have a $100-a-day monkey. Perhaps based on the observation "have a turkey on one's back."
Interesting, huh, how these things get started and changed over the years. I'm not sure I appreciate the "turkey" reference though...
Cold Turkeys don't get along w/ monkeys...

Thanks, guys. Well, my reward was supposed to be some overdue but not urgent dental work that would also greatly improve my smile, which now that I don't smoke I would really like to show off more.
Unfortunately, due to unforeseen expenses, it will have to wait a bit longer. (Among other things, increased hurricane activity in this area will cause insurance to go up rather steeply.)
I am on the "Free or inexpensive rewards" plan though, and take much pleasure in the "little things". So, I'm doing just fine.
Cold Turkeys are easily amused...

Awesome! Hopefully the Allen Carr book will be the final spur he needs. Just be there for support. Nagging didn't work for me. Only a quiet sense of determination.
