Ban smoking - period

Please correct me if i'm wrong. Smoking in a nut shell:

is Behavioural modification via chemical dependancy (nicotine)
Contributes to 30% of all cancer deaths.
nicotine in tobacco is more addictive then heroin (heroin is illegal) !
The fact that scientists have been looking for a cure for cancer for as long as we can remember and non-smoking public don't tollerate smoking in their space(not in the country i live anyway). Why don't the powers that be do us all a favour & ban smoking !. In the grand scheme of things it appears to me that they are only making a half ar*sd attempt. Sorry Guys, i just had to get this off my chest. thanks for your responces & i to agree with you all, freedom of speech, choice & etc, etc, o.k. then......it's pretty obvious they are not going to ban smoking, we all know this cos of $$$$$$ & the big 'P' word ....power. The politically correct people that run our politically correct lives (here in NZ anyway) are going to increase cigarette tax again !, cos it really works !!!!!! (i'm being sarcastic here), their excuse is that the ban on smoking in public places hasn't worked & as there is no change in the numbers of people smoking, a price increase will... ge-wiz... go figure !!! They just keep on punishing smokers. It's about time smokers grew a back bone or can't they just leave the poor smokers alone, cos even as a non-smoker i am so sick & tired of hearing about it. "NONSURGEON GENERAL'S WARNING: Cigarette smoking may cause you to become a second-class citizen" Not content with banning smoking inside enclosed areas, the anti-smoking zealots have even sucessfully banned smoking in open outdoor areas and are moving toward banning smoking even in the privacy of your own home! Why don't these p.c. police just be honest with us,... tell us the truth and that they just want to intrude our lives & gain control of our bank accounts & us. It seems to be working... yet again, ....another 'moment of revelation' !, It's been said that if you tell people a lie often enough, they will begin to believe it. o.k. i'm trying to be possitive here but boy i'm really, really, really, pissed with this !!!!! sorry but i've had a real attitude this week. :( My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/1/2005 Smoke-Free Days: 419 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 10,492 Amount Saved: $2723.5 Life Gained: Days: 60 Hrs: 3 Mins: 8 Seconds: 55

Hi Guys, A Political Party here is drawing up a bill to ban smoking anywhere in New Zealand. The bill would also make it illegal to produce or sell tobacco. here is part of the write up that was published today.
22.02.06 In 1995, tobacco advertising was banned, as was tobacco sponsorship the following year. And in December 2004 all workplaces, including bars, restaurants, clubs and casinos, became smoke-free. Each year the Government gets $1.2 billion from tax on tobacco products. MP Hone Harawira, who is drafting the private member's bill, said it was "not about trying to penalise the poor addicts who are smoking cigarettes". "But the tobacco companies can go to hell. We will no longer sacrifice our generations so you can make profits." Once drafted, it will need to win a ballot before being introduced to Parliament. Mr Harawira said he could not understand why no politician had drafted a similar bill. "I can't believe how we could have allowed this to carry on. This actually kills people and yet it's legal." Prime Minister Helen Clark, who is stridently anti-smoking, said through a spokesman that she did not support prohibition. She said it would simply criminalise people with an addiction, and she favoured a public health approach to tobacco and addiction. Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) director Becky Freeman said banning tobacco simply made it an issue for the courts to deal with, rather than keeping it as a health issue.
I guess that about covers it, plenty more where that came from !, although i can't see it going anywhere at last a politician has the guts to stand up and be honest. i see what you mean, for a country of only 4 million people $$ 1.2 billion bucks of Tobacco tax would be sorely missed. Will keep you posted. I think it's wrong WHERE the taxes go!!! If they would actually use more of that tax money to help people quit smoking, instead of wasting it on things that don't effect the smokers at all, then that tax money could actually do some good. But I think the problem is that society as a whole doesn't care about smokers! They think that we did this to ourselves, so it's up to us to quit this addiction, by ourselves. And tobacco will NEVER become illegal as long as polititians can tax the hell out of it! Again, since society doesn't care about the smokers, they don't care if they get taxed. It's really sad, but it's the way of life. Crave the Quit! kiwi, Why will cigarettes never be eliminated in our lifetime? Well, in "western" countries it all comes down to money. Period. No other valid reason what so ever. In "developing" countries, their ignorance is exploited by the tobacco industry. All we can do is keep ourselves clean and do what we can to support sticter smoking restrictions in public places. Personally, I'd like to get the board of directors of every, I mean every, tobacco company and lock them in a room. Then pump in cigarette smoke until you couldn't see your hand in front of your face. Let them choke and die like so, so many of their "customers". But hey, that's just my opinion. :p Be Strong. Be Smart.
