ex-smoker attitudes

17 years ago 0 186 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Smoking is in a category by itself hence this site!! For example when I used to smoke I would never tolerate my brothers smoking in my room I just hated the smell however it was perfectly ok for me to light one up when I got a craving!! I dont think its fair to judge other people as when its you at the other end its not nice!!

I haven't been quit long enough to know what I'll be like but what I HOPE to be like is encouraging. I hope once I make it a year that I can encourage others to do the same. As for family and friends that still smoke, nope, no way, are they smoking in my home ever again!!! Anyone who wishes to smoke outside, in my opinion has the right to do so. Smoking in public places.....a definite no way with me. Thank goodness I live in Ontario, where you can't smoke in any public place already. I think all ex-smokers are destined to be 'that guy' or holier-than-thou to a degree. How can you not be at this point? How can you say "I quit because I knew I was poisoning my body and it was going to kill me. I want through hell to get to this stage but yeah sure light up next to me of course I don't mind" I won't lecture or try to change my smoking friend's habits (I remember how much I resented that from others) but they can get that cigarette out of my face all the same from now on.

Hi I think it is a bit holier than thou to be intolerant of smokers. Fair enough if you want to avoid situations but to criticise a group that I was until recently a part of, is to me both hypocritical and intolerant. It is my decision to not smoke, smoking is an addiction and a health problem, it is not a moral issue. Three cheers for anyone who quits!!!!!!! I don't think that there's anything at all judgemental about "those' ex smokers. It's HARD to take. My mom never smoked, and her husband smoked for a couple years while in the military. He quit many many many many years ago, and he STILL can't stand to be aorund smoke. My mom, who's never smoked, does fine and it doesn't bother her. My husband was tkaing me out to eat afdter I had quit for 2 days for a reward. I guess that neither of us were thinking at all about a casino being a really stupid idea because when he told me that someoen had told him about this restaurant they liked in oen of the lcoal casinos, we decided to try it. He opened the door to the casino, and it was like this HUGE cloud came whirling out the door mixed in with the air conditioning, and it just took my breath away. We shut the door, and walked away as fast as we could! I don't know if i'll ever be able to eat in that restaurant we heard about. LOL Yesterday we met my ex husband to bring my children home, and when he pulled up to the meeting spot and opened his door, I groaned. I didn't ahve any control over it at all.. it just freeking STUNK! My children STUNK too.. I bit my lip until we got home with them and I stuck them in the shower. You know, i don't ahve any qualms about groaning when a stinky person comes up to me (I did it as a smoker when a person who hadn't showered came into my store too.. it just comes out and I don't know i'm doing it till it's too late), or walking on the other side of the street to avoid a smoker. What's important is that i don't breath that, or get nausiated by them, or even have a crave because of breathing their smoke. They're feelings aren't my concern, just liek my feelings weren't the concern of anyoen else when I chose to light up in public. I didn't have concern for anyoen else's feelings when i lit my cigarette.. so why should they care about me? Princess, i'm running into that at the store as well. I also smell people smoking out in the parking lot, and I can smell the people smoking when I take my walk in the morning. Everyone around me smokes, and some outside while others inside - I can smell both. It's funny - I never knew that I stunk the place up so bad before. There's just about no where outdoors that I can go without smelling cigarette smoke, and that's disheartening. I had the thought today that they (smokers) were poluting the entire earth. LOL!! I even as a smoker never really tollerated smokers. go figure. I think i hated it that much that i pretty much resented every facet of smoking from the lighting up to the butting it out. I hated inconsiderate smokers who just lit up subjecting everyone to their second hand smoke without a care, butting out on the sidewalk with the arrogance of well it keeps someone in a job dont it. I see it here at my place of work, butts in the garden, smokers alluding themselves telling people that its good for the garden. How could all those chemicals be good for the garden?? I walk into our foyer here at work, the smoking area is on the other side of the parking lot yet i can STILL smell the disgusting smell of ash and stale tabacco. Just to think i used to smell like that - sighs. I have always voiced an opinion in regards to the inconsiderate doings of other smokers and i will continue to do so. As for the health side of it, i encourage my closest friends to give up smoking. I say the old "I dont want you to die, please give up". It doesnt work but hey it makes them think for a moment. bump. I liked this post, found it interesting. In South Australia they are bringing in a law to stop adults subjecting children to second hand smoke in cars. Excellent move i think. I was subjected to cigarette smoke by my bestfriends mom when i was a child would not be suprised if this is why i became addicted. hmm will never know i guess lol. Also as my sence of smell is getting better by the day, i was walking out of the grocery store today and as soon as the door opened the stale stench of sickarette smoke!! Never noticed it before. What do all you new quitters think? PrincessC :) x

How do you think you will be? Will you be a pain in the rear or a *been there* person? As a smoker i always had respect for non smokers.......but i also had respect for the smokers....and was annoyed at the non and/or ex smokers that acted like i had just pulled out i rifle and began shooting. Some people could be really rude and ignorant. That i could not respect. At work, my survey has been that ex smokers are the worse at judging the smokers. The never smoked a day in their life people never said much at all. Well infact my dad quit smoking years ago and he is a nightmare about it. We have to tell him to be still. LOL I know that i will still treat smokers the same as i would anyone. I will not judge them because of choices they make. I will make the choice to be around them or not. This is my trip.....all mine. ;) Correen

I agree with Caddie. I live with my sister for now. She smokes and I have chosen not to. It's my quit not hers. A few days ago I was smoking with her. Who am I to judge?
