ex-smoker attitudes

17 years ago 0 506 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Thank God that I am not one of these "ex-smokers". If anything, I feel pity...if that...frankly, they just want to be left alone.....remember? If we want to get angry and "in your face" (about an addiction we ALL thoroughly engaged....yes all of us), then we should be marching in our capitols and/or where the cigarettes are produced to stop it at its source, instead of projecting our hate of what we were on those that still are addicted. 5 "very brief" months ago, when I was a smoker, people getting on my case for smoking only made me feel bad, sad, angry- mostly very angry; whatever- and I smoked more, not less. I've never reacted well to people TELLING me what to do and I doubt I'm that unique in this. As far as second hand smoke and hating smokers for that, well; there's always room for more hate in this world. Even if it were 5 years since my last drag, I would hope I wouldn't cop the "born again" attitude. Can't be around your old buddies or you'll "backslide", dontcha know! We're reformed addicts, not really something to be too uppity about. I mean, I haven't sprouted a halo and wings.....just a gut!!!! No- I don't find smokers disgusting or any other adjective. I'd like a smoke right now. I chose not to, but I don't mind admitting I sure did enjoy smoking. I'm a hedonist at heart. I enjoyed smoking...I just hated being utterly controlled....cigs were telling me what to do. How can I hate someone for doing something that I completely get? Yes- I crave sometime watching someone take a puff. They aren't some demon tempting me...I can't hate them for it. Oh well. Now, Republicans....maybe I CAN hate a little there!!! just joking, settle down now,,,, :eg: My Milage: My Quit Date: 2/18/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 156 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 6,240 Amount Saved: $1404 Life Gained: Days: 25 Hrs: 15 Mins: 9 Seconds: 40

This may sound wierd, but that's normal for me. The smell of smoke will always remind me of my Mom. She smoked. Therefore, I believe I will always like the smell of smoke, I associate it with some of the most loving times of my life. So, to some it smells bad, to me it smells like home. I also like the smell of campfires and old car exhaust.. so I'm just a strange bird ;-) My Milage: My Quit Date: 2/5/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 195 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 5,851 Amount Saved: $1365 Life Gained: Days: 18 Hrs: 23 Mins: 59 Seconds: 18

Correen... I vowed never to be one of "those" ex smokers. You know the kind the whine about smokers all the time. HA! I was only fooling myself. I remember where I came from and how horrible it is to hear others say "Please, don't smoke around me" I remember how awful it was to find a place to get my "fix" and the guilt associated with it when I was around non-smokers. But......I can't stand the smell of smoke. It is discusting. I simply remove myself from smoking areas and stay away from them but I can smell a smoker from a mile away now. I try my best not to cmplain but hey... it stinks! I am so grateful I don't smell like that anymore and hope that I never do again. Being an ex-smoker, or non-smoker is cool, but you don't have to be cruel. OK, so it stinks. Cut them some slack. How many people put up with your smell for how long?? When you smoked, nothing and no one could convince you to quit. And while you can try, you won't have a lot of influence on others. They each must seek their own quit. When they are ready they will. If you would like to be the one to offer them help when they are ready, you need to be their friend. They won't go to someone they don't like. Just my thoughts. correen, Your dad and I can become great friends!! :p Seriously, I have lost all tolerance for it. My boss had to ask me to take it easy on the smokers in my office since one of them complained about my um, er... comments.. ;p I have never been this caustic towards any group in my life. But somehow something just clicked in me. I can't explain it. It's not a holier than thou attitude, it's simply one of zero tolerance. To accommodate my "attitude" I do my darnest to avoid any and all smokers. Hmmm... I guess that explains some of my posts here.. :8|: Be Strong. Be Smart. I went to my brother and his girlfriends house yesterday. They both smoke out on the patio. Comversation goes something like this. brother "I'm going to step outside" girlfriend "I'll join you" me (with a grin) "i'm glad i don't have to do that anymore!" brother "how long have you been quit now?" me "i just celebrated 16 months!" g/f "wow! I need to quit! How did you do it?" If I had been judgemental, none of us would have enjoyed our visit. They would not invite me over much, if at all. And I wouldn't have had the opportunity to give them this website address! I tried to be a considerate smoke and I try to be a considerate ex-smoker. It's all just common courtesy. What a great thread! I feel like I should get a bumper sticker that says "I Love a Smoker". Actually I love several smokers. Why wouldn't I? Would I stop being nice to an alcoholic or a drug addict? Especially if I was one myself? I don't like the way smokers smell. I don't like the smell of perfume or aftershave either. When someone comes near me with that fruity or flowery kind of smell, I move away. I don't preach to them. Cigarettes Not Smoked

I mostly avoid smokers....however a couple are my dear friends....them I tolerate....but only on 'their' turf.....it's no smoking in my house and in my car. they seldom ride anywhere with me at the wheel....(hey gas is 3 bucks...I roll down my window and think of my savings LOL) I avoid smokers at restuarants...at a bar, I have been know to leave because of the smoke. for people who don't know that I have quit???? well, I have been known to work myself into situations just so I could pass on the wonderful information that it CAN be done. you would be surprised how people will listen if you don't come at them in attack mode! I know of at least two people that I influenced enough to get them work at quitting. both have been successful. I know 3 more that are at least listening and considering. and I don't consider myself one of "those" ex-smokers. I remember that it just made me mad to be treated that way. You can't influence others if you have them pi**ed off. Quitting is such a joy to me.....why ruin it being negative toward others....even if they are smokers?? Vinegar traps no flies.....of course my grammy said "who wants flies?" LOL Be kind to others (as you would have them be to you?) katy My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/4/2002 Smoke-Free Days: 1688 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 67,535 Amount Saved: $9621.6 Life Gained: Days: 220 Hrs: 5 Mins: 25 Seconds: 31

We are in a different world now. A better world as I see it! This is a great attitude to have and keeping your quit is the most important part! Judging benefits no-one and treating others as you would want to be treated is a rule that is worldly used! Thanks Correen, Keep Strong, Josie _____________________ The SSC Support Team.
