Exercise as a Rx for anxiety...

12 years ago 0 373 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Just wanted to pop in to commend you for making yourselves a priority.  Getting outside and getting our hearts beating a little faster (and not as a result of panic) is such a good thing to do for ourselves, I think.

I seem to have come down with a little cold and am debating as to whether I should roller skate this evening.  Hopefully, I will have my strength back but I'll just have to see what the day brings!

Have a good day!

Yes,it was a beautiful day..but today...it was sunny but very cold out there,so..we went to the mall, and walked our mile there and left,no shopping, just walking..i love to walk, and do yoga...its beginning to get better for me to do this, and i am feeling better too!
It seems i feel more alive when i can get out and walk!
I love being outdoors, but not in the cold...But i will get my daily walk in,even if it is the mall!

I hope you had a great walk yesterday.  I might have mentioned that I joined the gym at my son's karate studio so now I can exercise while he is in his classes.  It was wonderful.  Just as I was finishing my run, he came out from his class with a huge smile on his face.  I can't think of a greater thing to see!
On Monday, after my run, I was a little anxious and nearly had an attack - but I was so busy taking care of my son yesterday that I really didn't have time to acknowledge any anxious thoughts.  It was a great evening.  Yesterday, I can definitely say that the exercise (and a happy, smiling boy) were the perfect Rx for anxiety!
Have a wonderful Thursday - and thanks for the heart monitor information.  My husband does laugh at all of my gadgets that I bring with me - I sometimes have:  my son's itouch (which I use to determine the distance that I run...but it runs out of battery life if I run that and the music app so...), I bring my mp3 player, I bring my cell phone, I bring my water bottle..If only they had a water bottle that also had a GPS, phone, and played music!

Hi camieslug!

Thanks for responding to this thread..I really enjoyed reading about your experience with exercise this morning..You story is so inspiring. Congratulations on your cholesterol levels and on your success with the roller skating.. I am looking forward to seeing my numbers come down too. I always carry my water bottle, and cell phone too. These are very necessary and smart things to have when out exercising.

The heart rate monitor sounds like a great gift idea to yourself for all your hard work..I have a mio Motion +  strapless  monitor and just love it..It gives me my heart rate so I can stay in the zone I want to be in..This way I can speed up or slow down when I need to..It also has a pedometer which keeps track of the distance you have walked or run and lots of other features on it too..Like a calorie counter..There is both a men and womens version of this watch. They didn't have the womens in the store I got it in so I just got the mens..The only difference is the size of the watch band. I was able to cinch it up small enough to fit my wrist, so it fits and it works just fine..I have to say having this little device has been a great motivator and has also put my mind at ease. I have exercise hyper tension and need to be careful not to over due it so this monitor was just the ticket for me..I can now enjoy my workouts and work out safely..

Well I guess I have talked enough..Gotta go for now and get ready for my morning walk...

Happy Exercising!!!

Hi Red:

I definitely think that my running (I started this year) has helped to lessen stress in my life.  I also love to go for walks with my family.  Being active and being outdoors are so good for me.  It is definitely an RX for my cholesterol - I have to boast that my levels are now kind of awesome as result of increased activity and some diet changes.

I started to have anxiety in the middle of my runs - can you imagine?  I am happy to say that with this program, I have been making great strides (no pun intended) in overcoming my anxiety while running.  The panic attacks would happen after I traveled a certain number of miles from home or if I forgot to bring my water bottle or my cell phone...I have a few "crutches"
that I need to carry around with me.  I have been looking at heart monitors a lot lately (for a Christmas present for myself).

Vincenza, that is great that you can get out to run during these cold days.  I can't seem to function well in subzero temperatures - my lungs don't feel great afterwards.  I am actually allergic to the cold, too - if my skin gets exposed, I break out in hives. Which is kind of funny because we live very close to Canada and we have pretty cold winters.

This was a great topic, Red - I am glad you asked and I wholeheartedly agree.  Oh - and I will add that roller skating is the greatest!  I went last night and would definitely say I had zero anxiety - a wonderful feeling!

Hi Vincenza,

Thanks for the encouragement! and yes I am proud of myself for not giving up on me!

I made my 5000 steps today..yippee!!! even in a packed mall I had no panic at all..I did have to go outside so I could pick up my speed and reach my goal for today..Yes the heart monitor and pedometer are great motivators and will help me reach my goals..I just love having them...

Yes I have to agree there's nothing like a little exercise to clear the mind and brighten the soul..I also feel stronger and have tons more energy afterwords too..

Well gotta go for now and get some shut eye for tomorrows walk..

Happy running Vincenza!

Hi Jdoe,

So happy to hear how far you've come.  Your hard work does pay off.  You must be so proud!
Exercise is so effective.  I have really been enjoying running lately - even in the colder temps.  I find it helpful to clear my head, I feel stronger and have more energy afterwards!

A heart monitor is a great tool to use and will help you achieve your goals.

Happy Holidays & Happy walking!
