Change Your Eating Habits

Shari, thanks for the reminder about the Omega IIIs!  I got out of the habit of taking them and even brought my bottle in to work so that I might have a better chance of remembering - and it's been a week or so - and I can notice the difference, too!  Today I had two very anxious periods (that thankfully never turned into a panic attack - although this evening my anxiety had me on the verge of tears.).  I am so grateful to have CBT and this community

Vincenza,
I've tried different modalities, and dreamwork is part of our existance, and it helped  as a touchstone for progression, if the relationship can integrate a diary.  An electic and gifted mentor allowed me to get so far with so many obstacles using CBT seamlessly before it came into vogue.

Shari,
I found I had to speed up my metabolism by good food choice and appropriate portions mixed with daily exercise throughout the day.

Carmieslug.

Omega 111 Fatty Acids are excellent and I have been on them for a long time and felt fantastic.  Recently, I got tired of swallowing the horse sized pill and stopped taking it and I can tell the difference.  So, I've put them on my grocery list and will start taking them again.  I think it comes in liquid, to avoid the giant pill :)

I looked up the age, height to weight ratio to find my ideal weight range and I'm working on losing 20 lbs. and possibly 5 additional ones when I reach that goal.  I take a multi vitamin, vitamin C, vitamin E, B-complex, vitamin D/calcium and Fish oil.  I ride my stationary bike for 10 minutes in the morning, followed by 20 minutes of core strengthening yoga (written by a physical therapist).  I've read too many diet books, but I've found one that is flexible and that I can tailor to my needs.  It covers the basics on healthy eating and is more about counting carbs than calories.  It gives you positive coping strategies if you feel like you're going to quit and allows for adjustments if you feel weak or dizzy or the plan is difficult for your body to adjust.  It seems well balanced and covers all of the bases, including maintaining your weight after you've reached your weight loss goal.  You can take the weight off faster or slower depending on what you're more comfortable doing.

To relate it to anxiety, caffeine and sugar can enhance anxiety (I was addicted to both), it can also alter your mood into feeling bad and give your body a crash when it leaves your system.  So, why do it.  I've decided to use food to fuel my body, get healthier in body and mood, and stave off the middle age issues of borderline high blood pressure, possible heart issues, strokes, etc.

The key is focusing on the positive which is health and doing better, NOT on dieting.  I've written down a strategy of the reasons why I am doing this and I've written down positive alternate things I can do when I want to eat for reasons other than hunger.  I'm Italian and the motto is:  "Eat, it will make you feel better."  If I can overcome anxiety or manage it and get rid of panic attacks altogether, than I can do this as well.  It may not be easy, but hard work is underestimated in most things that are worth while.

Atenolol causes weird but harmless dreams. Quite often they are funny.

No this dream I was trapped in a phone booth full of snow with two other people. A red English type phone booth. Very claustrophobic. I can still feel it. I had to shrink myself down real small and sit on top of the snow till I could get out.

I have the residual looking over my shoulder feeling this morning from the F or F syndrome is all. I'm fine, I just want coffee now.

I was probably sleeping cramped last night is all.

That's a good question Davit.  I also wonder what roles weird dreams can play in triggering anxiety.
Do you record your dreams?  If so, how has it helped with alleviating or understanding your anxiety?

Hope you're feeling better this morning!

I have mentioned before that even once cured the potential for a panic attack is still there if all the requirements are met. The difference is that not only do you have the knowledge and tools to handle it but you will probably see it for what it is rather than what you think it is.

A few minutes ago I had a classic middle of the night panic attack.

My cat was sitting on my chest telling me he was hungry. Since once he has something on his mind he will persist till he gets it, I got up to feed him. Better than listening to fish breath yell in my face. Besides I remembered that I had chocolate cake in the fridge.
Big mistake. Shortly after I have all the classic panic symptoms set off by the cake and a weird dream. So I'm here with a cup of Ginger Mint and my fingers telling me all the reasons to just go back to sleep. I mean that is what journaling does right. Besides the tea is too hot. The dream was not only stupid but impossible too. But since it wants to go round and round I will just modify it and play that harmless version.

I need to sleep since today is so important and will be so busy. Besides I need to start my day positive if I am to continue the experiment.

So has anyone kept track of what foods exacerbate their panic attacks. For me it is usually Hamburger late in the evening.

Eyes are getting heavy again.

Remember that with panic and anxiety disorders comes hyper vigilance and any foreign feeling can set off panic. This includes food. Caffeine is probably the worst and will be till you get better and learn not to be hyper vigilant or learn to tolerate the hyper vigilance. I can drink some coffee again. It still works the same way I just know how to deal with it. So now when I fall off the good food wagon I have the skills to tolerate the hyper vigilance and use the bad feeling as a reason not to do it again till next time I fall. And I will, but I do feel much better if I stay on the good food wagon. My failings Include a Teen burger every couple of months, a glass of wine with supper and of course coffee. The odd chocolate bar too. No added salt and very little sugar.

This is a great topic about how to reduce stress.

More specifically for me, was the stability of mood, once I spread my eating over 5 meals.  Everyone wants to ride the "love rollercoaster", but nobody wants to feel unpredictable, and worse, be with someone else who is umpredictable!

Compared to last year, following a course talking about describing the connection between sugar and insulin and meals, I feel I have a tranquility I looked forward to but never thought I could have

I have used these diet modifications with good success.  A friend has suggested that I increase the amount of Omega III Fatty Acids in my diet as well.  Have you heard of this study?  I have tried taking fish oil tablets and am optimistic.  If nothing else, my cholesterol will benefit.
