I finally have friends!  Thanks to everyone for their suggestions.  I've tried a lot of them over the years and I guess all of that persistance finally paid off.  I think the key is to keep trying and never give up.  Eventually, you will find friends.  I used to be involved in knittings groups, but found out the local ladies were ordained witches and pagans and satanists, so being a Christian, you can imagine the conflict of interest.  I did, however, remember a retired man that was at the book store.  He and I have seen each other at the store, over the past few years, so although we knew each other, we weren't officially introduced.  So, that's all it took, an introduction and now we are friends and all of his friends are now my friends.  Both men and women.  So, every weekday from 10 till noon, I have friends to sit and chat with at the book store.  It feels really great to fit in.  I'm also expanding my horizons, and since there is no work, I'm looking for volunteer work that could potentially lead to a job when a position becomes open.  I'm also considering taking some technical training classes and I'm looking into motorcycle mechanic classes or auto mechanic classes.  That's right the chicken lady may turn into a grease monkey :)  I like to try new things and whether or not it becomes the right career for me, I can keep trying until I find my niche in life.  Being free from panic and anxiety opens up whole new opportunities I would never have even considered before.  I am free to try new things and see where my path in life takes me.  When one door closes, another one opens, so that's the attitude I'm taking with me on my journey.

There's a craft club in a town nearby where they meet once a wk. to show their latest project, knitting, crochet, sewing, quilting, rug hooking.  They work side by side at tables and chat.  Maybe you could start something like that?  They use a community room, free of charge, offer coffee/tea at break time.  The meeting is about 2 hours and there are card tables for those who want to play cards too.  Some retired guys come for the cards (women play too), though they make up maybe 30% of the group.  Great way to meet people of all ages.  They post this club ad in church bulletins, post offices, community events column of local paper.

I'm glad you posted this topic. I'm intrested to see the posts here. I hope people keep replying to this one and add to this discussion about friends, making friends seems to get tougher as we get older. I keep looking forward to being in a retirement home when i can finally be with "my people" because my favorite hobbies are kntting and quilting!! :)
(sometimes i think i was born 100 years too late..)

This past spring i went to a spinning retreat (spinning wool, not those things you do at Shapes exercise centres) and learned that spinners (at least this bunch I met) were fabulously relaxed and content and joyful people to be around (mostly women with a few men). So you just never know, if you can check out groups (i was a knitter but us knitters we're allowed to hang with the spinners as they sort of provide our drug of choice...wool!). tee hee.

hope you find what you seek.

Shari,
Great idea and its just across the street from you.  You could also bring something interesting to read and that may start up a conversation too.

Well worth it. I also leave a tip so the waitresses remember me because if they will talk to you them the people think you are Ok to talk to. But then I might just be easy to talk to because even the tourists talk to me.
