Hi kkkkatie,

Congrats on over 8 days now!

That is a tough question to answer as it depends on the individual. The more experiences you have that confirm this belief (that you don't need alcohol to have a good time) and the more you work on consciously thinking about this the more quickly the shift will happen. That being said, thoughts of drinking=fun may always have to be managed. It will get easier with time though.

What have you enjoyed about being alcohol free? What are some positives you are noticing?

Hi Kkkkatie,

First of all, congratulations and well done on your 8 days!! I am on Day 28 and the thoughts definitely come less often and less intensely. More like a glancing memory triggered.   I found the few weeks the hardest and once I went to a few social functions and saw that I was fine without alcohol, my confidence began to increase.  It is a habit and the thoughts will be there at the beginning but it does get easier.  You know, once you make up your mind that this is a life you want-alcohol free-you can do it.

I found reading blogs and books very helpful in motivating myself, and in seeing the positive perspective of those who have quit for a while.

Best of luck!  You can do this!

If the thoughts are incessant, then we are in a dangerous position. For me, the obsession is long gone by working the 12 steps of AA. When I watch some comercial of a beer or wine or bourbon, it does not bother me anymore. Because its just a thought. But, back before entering AA and out there drinking, yeah always. I surrounded my life with alcohol. I would not go to places that don't serve alcohol, which are few.

Hi there!
So I am on day 8 without a drink...feeling good.
I've been having deep and very restful sleep which is amazing.
We've been out at supper, and although I would love a drink, I've just ordered soda water and cranberry, or had a virgin ceasar.
My question is...when do your thoughts reset about drinking...I always correlate having a good time, and drinking...going to a restaurant and drinking...socializing with friends and drinking...I must say, these thoughts are constant!

Hope others are having success!
