Success So Far- 7 Days In

9 years ago 0 618 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Hello there Waldd,

Have they banned smoking in restaurants in Germany yet?   Last time I was there, I was near the start of my quit, and everywhere we went we were surrounded by smokers!  At the age of sixteen, (many moons ago,) I learned to smoke one summer when staying with a German family!

My sympathies are with you, but, you are quitting for you and you alone, so it really is a question of knuckling down.  You know what to expect when you go out, so have coping strategies ready.  Do you have a dummy cig. to use when out?

You are doing well to remain quit for so long, and you have found the best place for support....here at SSC.  You sound really motivated this time, so let's hope this is your forever quit!!!

Whatever it takes, just don't smoke!!!

Love Lolly.

Guten Tag Waldd!!!

I still remember a couple German words from high school!  Maybe you can help me brush up on it a bit before I go to my 40th high school class reunion next month!  Our old German teacher is going to be there as a guest of honor and she's 100 and still living by herself!  Anyways, I want to welcome you to the SSC and congratulate you on making it through Hell Week!!!  MAJOR Accomplishment!  Being in Germany, I hope that a fine fermented beverage was on your reward table!!!   Be sure to reward yourself often during your first few days, weeks or in my case years!  It really helps early on and by golly, you deserve it!

Like Rock, during my first few months, I stayed really close to this site for support and believe that is one of the most important things I could have done!  Everyone helped me to protect my quit and fight for my freedom every day!  Read and post and if you have any questions, just ask!  There are many here that can guide you to where you need to go.

By now, the nicotine is out of your system and what remains is the mental battle with your nico-demon.    Try to keep psyched up about gaining your freedom and know that all it takes to succeed is committing to N.O.P.E, Not One Puff Ever.  When ol' nic starts nagging, its' NOPE!    Crave your quit and freedom is waiting for you!

Stick close, read and learn, buddy! You CAN do this!

Waldd, congrats on 7 smoke free days!  When I quit, many of my friends still smoked.  I actually stayed away from many of them when I first quit so I wouldn't be tempted.  Not sure if you can avoid them while they are smoking, at least for the first month or so.  I stayed close to this site, and read tons of posts, just like you have.  Post as often as you need as somebody is usually close by!  I like your approach of one day at a time too!  We're all rooting for your success!

Hi Ashley,

I live in Germany and realized early on in the quit (first few days) that I was not going to get much support from my German friends or colleagues, I think there is still a bit of a hesitancy in reaching out for help (both giving and receiving)...plus the majority of them all smoke anyways!  I had come across this website a day before I quit officially last week just to get information on how best to make this time successful. After the first few days I recognized I was going to need some further help and support and it would be even more enjoyable and relaxing if I could do it in my native language, hence my post from earlier this morning. Taking it day-by-day but so far it feels pretty good!

Welcome Waldd,

I am glad you are finding the site helpful. What has motivated you to come here today?

Hi Everybody,

First off: thank you all for this incredible resource! I have been reading so many of your messages here over the past few weeks, they have been incredibly helpful and inspiring as I try now this sixth time in my life to give up smoking. I have been living in Germany since 2007 and it is not the best environment to seek support to quit in, am looking forward to learning more about everyone here and having a chance to converse in my native English!

I started my "Quit" last week using the Nicorette Spray as a helper (not sure if it is available in the States, pretty sure it is available in the UK), has been useful in addressing the intense cravings and keep me somewhat balanced though the grinding instinct to smoke is still pretty intense.  In the past I have used the patch, gum, cold turkey...never lasted for more than a few days. For the past few years I felt like I was locked in this horrible cycle, stress caused me to smoke and the smoking caused me stress. It was one of those "look in the mirror" moments a few weeks which finally got me motivated to quit and quit for good.

Suppose that is enough for now, just wanted to get active and introduce myself, am looking forward to the coming adventure smoke-free!
