Struggling

10 years ago 0 11221 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Hi Westhamott,

Our fantastic members have gave you excellent advice. I only have one question to add, what climate do you live in? In colder climates this time of year can be hard. SAD can cause or worsen depression so you might want to consider this if you are looking into treatment.

Glad to hear you are feeling a bit better now though. Keep us updated on how you are doing.

Elaine, I highly recommend counseling if it is available and affordable for you. It helps so much. Smoking may provide a quick chemical fix but can't help solve any problems. Depression is very difficult to deal with and therapy is super helpful. You're doing great with your quit and I wish you luck overcoming your depression.

Hey Elaine!!

A warm welcome to you!  Huge congrats on a great start!  You're doing great so far!

It has been noted several times here on different threads here on the Forums about smoking "masking" symptoms of depression and when we quit, those symptoms come to light.  If you are concerned that it is effecting you more and more, you might want to talk to a councilor.  Another option is to check out the SSC's sister site, depression center dot com.  There is a survey there that  you can take to see if it is something more serious than the holiday blues, etc.

Check out the "My Program" tab above, too and read about rewarding yourself and how rewards can help improve your mental well being.  I know that there are a lot of threads on here about dealing with the blues and blahs, too.  Most of us got them and may still get them.  Heck, there are still memories or triggers that pop into my head during the holidays that are depressing.  Sometimes it's a Christmas carol or a commercial on TV that brings a tear to my eyes.  I attribute them to remembering old times that I miss and know that I'll never get to experience those great times ever again.  Quitting is sometimes like that... a great memory or trigger comes up which you remember smoking at the time and it IS depressing that as a non-smoker you will never get to experience that "great" memory again.  After thinking about it you might be able to rationalize it and be thankful that you can do something similar and it will turn out even better because you ARE a non-smoker!  That should put a smile on that pretty face of yours!

Try to keep a positive mental attitude as best as you can!  There are so many joyous things about being a non-smoker, so always try to pick out and put your arms around those thoughts and try to brush those negative ones under the carpet!  Life IS good!

Crave that great quit of yours, Elaine, and rejoice!  It only gets better from here!

Hi Elaine,

I am sorry to hear that you are struggling.

The depression that you are feeling may have nothing to do with quitting smoking but may be magnified because you are quit. In the past, this feeling may have been "helped" by smoking (obviously not) and you are taking this opportunity to blame your quit for the way you feel now. Take a look at what else is happening in your life to see if that is the real root cause.

Whatever you are feeling now, smoking will not help in the long run. Tough it out Elaine, 78 days is immense and  something you can be very proud of. Just drive on through.

Best Wishes
Penitent

Hi, my name is Elaine and I quit on Oct 1st. But over the last 5 days have been experiencing depression, which I can only assume is nicotine withdrawal. How can this be after two and half months?
