Hi everyone, Great discussion going on here! Just a reminder to also discuss any medication concerns with your doctor or pharmacist. Also, what affects one person one way, may have a different affect on someone else. Casey _____________________________ The Panic Center Support Team

My experience of Paxil has no positives whatsoever. I was given it when I was 15 because I was experiencing anxiety and felt unable to go to school. I was never really told much at the time, and the doctors weren't very helpful, but they decided to give me Paxil. I wasn't on it very long, but I never felt less anxiety about going to school. I generally didn't feel 'right'. Very difficult to explain but it wasn't a nice feeling. Seeing as the drug hadn't helped me go to school I was taken off it. I stopped taking it very slowly, but I still experienced severe withdrawal symptoms - I felt shakey, hot and cold and generally bad. I was always told the drug wasn't addictive, but even though it had no positives on me mentally, I knew if I'd taken another tablet the physical withdrawal symptoms would have stopped - to me this is a sign that it could be addictive. I have since learnt that the drug has been banned for use on patients under 18.

Hi there, I have been on Paxil 20mg for about 1 year now. It is working fabulous for my panic. I have to admit I was skeptical about the whole weight gain side effect. But now I realize it is true!. I have gained about 20 pounds over the weight I have been my whole life. I seem to be steady at the weight I am at now, and I have to admit that it definitly increases my desire to eat, eat and eat! I am working out again now and it helps to keep the weight off. Other side effect, makes me more outspoken and I get angrier easier. Not necessarily a bad thing for me as I was so passive before. I speak my mind now more easily. My fiance has noticed i do anger more quickly so I have to watch to keep that under control. Also my libido is down the drain, I do enjoy it when it happens but it takes a lot of effort on my partners behalf to make me want it. Other than that I have to say ...those side effects are much better than the hell I was going through daily with panic. I plan to try to come off of it after my wedding next November. I hear from some it's really tough and other say they were fine, I think its an individual thing. Hope that info helps. By the way, when I started the paxil I felt worse (more panicky, spacey) etc for like 2 weeks... hang in there it will go away and you will suddenlty start to feel better. If not after 4 weeks, it may not be the med for you. I started on 10mg's and it was working great for about 5 months, then started getting anxious again so uped it to 20mg and have been on that for over a year.

Hi there. I'm new to this group (well, to this website and it's the first time i take part in an online discussion!) but i decided to try something new as i'm a little desperate. Concerning the Paxil question, I took it for 4 years and it did wonders for me. I felt NORMAL for the first time in my life! I was able to live, go to work, have fun, plan things, be excited about the future, etc. The meds gave me a well-deserved break from anxiety (I've had it since i was a child and was untreated until age 25) However, i gained about 40 pounds and completely lost my libido... what a trade-off, eh? So last february, i started to slowly wean myself off it with the help of my doctor. I decided this because i want a child and Paxil has been proven to cause problems for the baby if taken in the last trimester. The withdrawal was simply HORRENDOUS! I was ill and felt horrible almost all the time. I went from 20 mg to 0 over many months time (from 20 to 15 to 10 to 7,5 to 5 to 2,5 to 0) dropping the dose every month. Now it's been 2 months since i completely stopped taking it and i have been steadily declining: renewed anxiety, panic attacks, feeling dizzy ALL THE TIME, etc. I can control it better than before because i took a 12-week CBT program, but i feel i'm losing the battle... So for those of you who wish to take Paxil, BEWARE - withdrawal is the worst of any antidepressant. I have a question for those of you who managed to come off Paxil: how are you today? How long did withdrawal take? I heard of someone who said they only felt normal after 6 months! Thanks!

I took Paxil for seven years. It works very well but does not take away the panic attacks. You will have less and you will feel less anxious throughout the day. Serious weight gain though! It also slows your metabolism and after time starts causing problems with blood sugar levels and cholesterol. I went through the most hellacious withdrawals I could not have ever imagined, but managed to get off it completely in January of this year. I have lost 40 pounds since without even trying! If you are going to go with Paxil I strongly suggest you checkout the website quitpaxil.info/ before you decide to get on Paxil. I found that website during my withdrawals and I seriously believe it saved my life. It was so horrendous I swore I would never take meds for this again. The only thing that got me through it was because it was so bad that I knew if I got back on the Paxil to take away the withdrawals, I would have to go through it again. Remember - Paxil is not for the rest of your life (as with any meds) and you will go through the withdrawals when the time comes. Get on the net and research any meds you want to take until you are satisfied. Look for both the good and the bad. If you are serious about taking the Paxil, please check out the site I mentioned.

I took Paxil, regular and the CR for about a year and a half, it helped alot, I took it along with Klonopin {Paxil in the morning, low-dose Klon at night} I loved it, unfortunely I gained weight on it and was taken off by my nurse and put on Zoloft which I am now weaning off of and I am hoping to go back on a low-dose Paxil again. Paxil worked well, it made me tired but it helped get rid of the panic, I liked the Paxil CR better, other than the weight gain and tiredness it was a good med. Zoloft is too activating for me, but I did lose the weight on it. I think Paxil is the best SSRI for anxiety/panic, it did not work on depression too much but I do think its the best for panic. I started very low and built up slowly, I think I gained weight because I felt so good I ate, I having panic so bad before starting it I was vomiting blood! the paxil let me eat again and I slept better too. It was a little rough going off but I think any med will cause withdrawal if not done slow, you hear alot of bad about Paxil but it really helped me, and as I said before it does not cause that "jittery black coffee feeling" some of the others do. To sum it up I think Paxil is good for anxiety and panic, Good luck Michael and God bless, Debbie.

Has anyone ever tried Paxil for panic...if so, at what dosage? Any side effects while using ? Any while withdrawing? I heard Paxil is the medication of choice for panic but has the worst side effect profile? What is the best ssri for panic? Do we normally need to take a benzo as well? Thanks
