Long-term Quitter side effects?

13 years ago 0 763 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Hello BF!!!!!  I have to wonder is this is stress related.  Sounds like a lot going on.  I agree with the others...see your doctor...and de-stress!!!!
Good to hear from you.

I think I read somewhere that this can be a symptom of continual relapse.

As I know from your own admissions here over the years that you are not smokefree from the quit date shown on your meter, I wonder if those relapses could have anything to do with these rather strange symptoms that you are now experiencing?

Hi BS! I can't say I remember these symptoms happening to anyone who wasn't a new quitter, so yes you right when you say it sounds entirely strange. I do agree with Lolly though in the thought that it must be from some other cause. Get it checked out, and do some destressing. Stress can be a trigger. Take care of yourself!

Hey there BS. I didn't cough or have phlegm before or after i quit smoking, although i've woken with a stale & clammy smokers mouth a couple of times which i think is strange.

Speaking from experience, stress can weaken the immune system & can also lead to bad eatinging habits, lack of sleep & excerise.

I've also seen a few 'work promotions' end in tears. Sometimes the additional money / responsibily some of these 'promotions' bring isn't all it's cracked up to be. Not saying this is your case but remember some 'me time' & to take care of number 1.

Hi BS,

It sounds like you are both stressed and over-tired.  Both of these things can cause your body to give you a warning that you are over-doing things.  I doubt if your symptoms are to do with your quit as you have been quit for so long.

Your symptoms should not be ignored however, and I'd suggest you see your doctor and have it checked out.  I never really had the phlegm clear up, even after nearly 7 years......caused by some COPD from 40 years of smoking!  It does get worse when I'm stressed or tired, but I'd still suggest you see a doctor to be sure.

Love Lolly.

The only thing I can think of would be an unusually, ridiculously high amount of stress due to a recent promotion at work, and planning a wedding.  Other than that, no.  I haven't been sick, nor have I been sneaking cigarettes! ;)  So I can't think of anything that might be causing it physically.  Just stress, but I don't know if that could be related or not.

Hi Butterfly swimmer,

Fellow members who have reached the top of the mountain and beyond in their journey to quit smoking will hopefully be of help in answering your questions.
In the meantime, is there anything else that may be causing or related to the symptoms you are experiencing?  A recent cold perhaps?  Environmental causes?

Hope these symptoms will pass as quickly as they came on!

Hey everyone! :)  I hope everybody is doing well.

I've been having some strange "side effects" lately, and I'd like some answers as to why - perhaps the mods can tell me why these things are happening?

Anyways, I've been having that smoker's "taste" lately.  Ya know... that "taste" you often get the first few months after you quit smoking?  Why, after all these years, would that be happening to me again all of a sudden?!?!

Also, that nasty brown phlegm that you get when you first quit?  Why now would that be coming back?

I'm a little bit worried as to why these "new quitter" side effects are all of a sudden, after YEARS of not smoking, would all of a sudden start up again?!  Any thoughts?  Any other long-term quitters ever have this happen after several years?
