This post was very helpful for me too!  Thanks for all the advice on this post.  One of my favorite things is (homemade not store bought) frozen red/purple grapes and small frozen pineapple chunks.  Have a great day everyone!

Alice,

Weight gain of around 5-10 pounds after quitting is normal. Its coz our body undergoes so many changes. Our sense of taste improves, our body start gaining more energy from the food that we eat, ur metabolism rate decreases etc.

So my advise dont loose your sleep over this issue. This weight gain is temporary.

Also never go on crash diet. when v starve ourselves, our body automatically goes into survival mode i.e. it starts storing fat to keep u alive. Moderation here is the key.

Almonds and all other nuts are actually very good if u want to loose weight. they contain monosaturated fats which is a good form of fats.

And as mentioned by Helena never skip your breakfast. It is the most important meal of the day and it actually helps u in loosing weight.

I am just running. no other exercise. Consistency is the key point here. gradually increase the distance that u run and the intensity.

Best of luck for weight training routine

Alice,

Wanted to add a tip to all the great ones members have been suggesting.

Eating breakfast is a key factor to preventing weight gain. Numerous studies have shown that individuals who eat breakfast, are leaner and gain less weight than those who do not. It helps you to eat less and more regularly through out the day.

You're doing a lot of hard work, and feeling the rewards. Keep going!

Yasir,

Thanks for the tips.  I have been trying to drink more water, fresh veggies, and fruit.  The past few days I also bought a little book to keep track of all that I am eating.  It allows me to look back at the end of the day and determine where the calories may be hiding.

I have allergies to wheat, gluten, dairy, and potatoes (and more).  So, I haven't had french fries or pringles in years.  My problem food is nuts (mostly almonds - I can't just have 10) and dips with veggies (so many calories).  Last evening while relaxing I made a small veggie platter (carrots, peppers, cauliflower, mushrooms, and cucumbers) and ate them with no dip.  It tasted just as good and I felt better this morning when I woke up.

Congrats on losing 25pounds!  That is amazing.  What type of exercise are you doing?  I have been running but today I am starting a weight training routine.

Cheers

Alice,

Try to eat intelligently which means subtituting one food with another. e.g. instead of eating french fries or pringles eat popcorns. Popcorns are very low in calories, are nutritious and also they keep your mouth busy for longer period of time which psychologically plays very import role.

Try to consume food that are low in calories but makes u feel full like apples, water melons etc. prefer eating raw fruit rather than drinking the juice. Juices are pulp free and they contain more calories.

Consume lots of water and green tea. put a few drops of lemon in green tea as lemon helps in burning fat. start your day with a glass of water. drinking water on empty stomach has a lot of benefits.

and if u can, stop eating at least 3 hours before going to bed.

Cut the amount of sodas and soft drinks that u consume. they are full of calories.

and of course exercise regularly.

I hope these tips will help u. I have recently lost more than 25 pounds and these tips helped me like anyhting

The weight for me came off later after 200 days or so of quitting.  At the beginning your metabolism slows down and the hand mouth thing seems to be strong the first couple of months. Little tips that helped me. I tried to always take things with me on the road so that I would not succumb to fast foods and the like.  Most restaurants are not good for you so try to limit going out too often.  Exercise is the best because it not only improves self esteem but you tend to eat healthier and crave more water rich foods, like fruits veggies etc.  Try to stay mostly in the produce aisle and away from the middle of the supermarket (processed foods). If you run out of ideas on what to make you can find many great books out there on healthy eating. Most of all accept and be kind to yourself right now for who you are.. a person who has quit smoking and going through life transforming changes.  Give your body time to adjust to all of this, the weight issue for most adjusts if keep doing as above.  Oh and drink lots of water.. you can lose lots of weight just doing that, google it if you want to know more.  Good Luck, Ron

Brenda,

Congrats on losing 57 pounds!  That is something to be proud of and it is very motivational for newbies.  I think I am going to try to be as healthy as I can (reaching for veggies and water intead of junk food and continue to run each day instead of feeling sorry for myself).

Do you have any tips on preventing weight gain?

Brenda, thanks for the reminder that this CAN be done...

You are my motivator, I think of you when I get stressed out about the weight gain...and say to myself "Brenda quit smoking and lost a lot of weight...I can do it too!!!"

I gained nine pounds when I quit smoking and have lost 57 pounds since April. Quitting smoking makes it easier to lose weight, because exercising is easier as a nonsmoker.
