Ok I made it through the first 24 hours!  Felt the need last night but it passed.  This morning was tougher, I found myself thinking about it from the minute I opened my eyes this morning.  The car ride to work was the hardest as this was my smoking habit before.  Nevertheless, I made it.  Thanks for the words of encouragement.  I'm looking forward to HELL week being over.

Congrats, Big Poppy!!!!!  You are doing great!!!  Keep on posting, reading and looking for other diversions for the next week, hour or minute, as needed.  Take a short walk....deep breath....or cold drink when you get a crave......it will pass and you will be the better for it!!!!!!!

Keep the Quit,

Dave

Thanks Jim.  Good timing on your reply as I was just about to go leave work and get a pack.  Its not even 12 hours smoke free here and I was really starting to doubt myself.  I'll get through the day and be back here tomorrow with another update.

Hey Bigpoppy!!!

Welcome to the SSC!!!  You have found the best place for obtaining knowledge and support!  I was so lucky to have found this site right before my quit date because I am positive that I would not have been able to quit without the help of all of our quit buddies here!

Stick close the first few weeks!!!  Read and learn from the Program and from fellow quitters here on the forums!  I practically lived here my first few weeks!  I would get done with a job and read a few posts, do some searches (the search function works great!), and post and then get up and do another job, etc.  There is a wealth of information here and you will need all that you can get to be successful in your future battles with the nico-demon!!!

Be sure to prepare yourself well and do go through all the milestones in the Program, as the better prepared you are the better chance for success!!!  You know the 6-P's...  Proper Planning Prevents Piss-Poor Performance!!!  There are other useful features, like the workbook, your crave diary... check them all out!

Finally, if the craves  REALLY  start to get to you, post here for help and wait for 5 replies!  By that 5th one, your crave will be gone and hopefully you hadn't run out to buy that next pack!

It is also very helpful to try to maintain a very Positive Mental Attitude about your quit!!  Keep telling yourself that you  CAN  do this, because all you have to do is look around to see the success that people are having here!  Try to get words like "I can't" right out of your vocabulary and try not to let this process get you down!  Try to keep upbeat because the outcome of this is that you will be  FREE!!!

So, read and learn and yell when you need us!  You can do it!

              Jim

Welcome, bigpoppy! Sometimes it's like that: second to second, minute to minute, hour to hour. As you get more time in, the easier it does get. The cravings come farther and farther apart and become less intense. So it's not a big deal to give hour to hour updates. Post as often as you want and need to. Make sure that you drink lots of ice, cold water. The water will help flush out all of he toxins and it also speeds up metabolism. Having some sugar-free candy and gum, as well as lots of veggies also help. Most of all realize that you are not in it alone and that lots of people have quit. The big secret: don't smoke.

thanks Karen and Memie!  I feel ridiculous giving hour by hour updates compared to some of you who have been smoke free for many months but oh well.  I made it through the lunch hour but it was pretty hard.  I have no idea how I'll make it till the morning if it keeps up like this.
