Still have a little bit of a morning cough....not coughing up as much...but my lungs continue to clear themselves alittle at a time....and I'm very grateful for that. I'm sure if smokers could actually unzip their lungs and have a good look, there would be alot more quitters out there. The damage smoking does...it's horrible. I have some regrets in life...and starting to smoke tops that list !!!

Thanks for the reply Samantha :)

The cough seems to be mostly in the morning when I first wake up. When I first started my quit it was a dry cough, now I'm coughing up the mucus you described....I don't mind this cough simply because I know my lungs are clearing themselves and I'm getting that crap out of my system....the more the better !!!:)
Other symptoms....hmmm....I seem to get mild headaches and I'm abit jittery...I can feel a little nausea at times as well, but it's all manageable and I keep in mind that the farther I go the better it's going to get....I have to keep positive.
      Thanks Again !!!

Hi Detox,

The coughing is definitely a symptom of quitting smoking. As you quit smoking you can experience an uncomfortable cough. You can start to cough up black/brown mucous. What is happening is that your body's Cilia (which are tiny hair-like particles that line your lungs) are in a healing process.

They are first paralyzed and your body does not want to produce any mucus, therefore a dry cough sets in. As the cilia begin to heal themselves they start to clean all areas of your lungs. This is where you start to cough up all that awful mucus.

These symptoms can last day or weeks after you quit smoking. The healing is a long process of change, even though some of the benefits come more quickly than others. Try drinking more water, herbal tea and even cough drops or candy. Sitting in the bathroom with the shower running or using a humidifier at night may also help to dislodge mucus.

That being said, if you have a symptom that persists or seems worse than you expected, you should consult a doctor.

Have you experienced any other new symptoms?

Members, have you experienced a bad cough during your quit and what did you do to help it?

Hi Everyone !!!
Don't know if this really falls into a withdrawal symptom....but it is a result of quitting smoking. I'm on day 12 and this morning I've woken up to a pretty persistant cough....but a good cough. My lungs are starting to clear themselves....as gross as this might seem....and the stuff that is coming out of me is disgusting....I'm very pleased and encouraged by it. My body is healing itself and is rejecting the toxins I've been putting into it. I could'nt be happier :)
Have a great smoke free day everyone !!!!
