Breakingfree,

You have received lots of amazing support and encouragement from fellow members who care about your health and your baby's wellbeing.

Hope you are feeling better and more positive and that you have managed to have another prenatal appointment with your doctor so that you can feel reassured that your baby is doing well.

Please keep us posted and let us know how you are doing in your quit.

My mother smoked all during her pregnancy's with my sister and I.  It was very common back then for women to smoke as many of the health risks weren't known by the general public back then.  I would not worry so much that you have caused terrible harm at this point.  But I would still work very hard to quit to decrease any odds of harm.  I was lucky - I was so nauseous when I was pregnant that it was easy to quit with no cravings.  I had quit for 15 years  and then started again when I was going through a divorce.  Not one of the brightest things I ever did as I am having a much harder time quitting this time.

hi there.   take a deep breath and realize this is the most difficult thing you will ever do and you can do it.   i am 50 years old and smoked forever. almost 35 years.....  not anymore.   my mom smoked when she was pregnant with me - they knew very little in those days and even though we know more now...i am fine - was fine - had a healthy childhood - the cigarettes did not damage me.   you are a good mom.   it takes willpower - strength - a lot of tears - coming to this site often...reminding yourself why you are doing this.   good luck...
p.s. i lost my job on february 28th and it's the first time since i am 15 that i am unemployed.  i have really wanted a cigarette these past few weeks more than i did a few months ago.  all the triggers came down...stress, panic, fear, and of course..what did i always reach for?  so this test has been a big one for sure - but i have not caved in and neither will you.   we are all here behind you.  NotOnePuffEver  (again)  :)

Breaking free - first stop beating yourself up - right now!! When I had my sons, my ob smoked and there were plenty of ashtrays in the waiting room! Both my sons were fine and have IQ's in the genius range today. Absolutely go see your doc to hear precious luv's heartbeat. And talk to him about alternatives to NRTs. Ask about Yoga- see if the YMCA has a heated pool - that feels sooooooo good. Medically I don't know about Welbutrin or Chantix - again ask the doc. And as far as being a bad mommy - well, as the years roll by, I think you'll find that you'll break almost all the rules in the perfect mommy book! And things will still turn out alright. I'm here and we are all pulling for you.
Blessings,
Joyce

Peteg, you're a nut!!!!  lol

Breakingfree - welcome to SSC and congratulations on your pregnancy!  Before you get all worked up, let me tell you that my mother-in-law tells the funniest story about drinking, smoking and dancing on tabletops when she was pregnant with my husband - and he was just fine.  Now, I will say, the risks are there.  But, especially in early pregnancy, don't beat yourself up too much.

Because I was a total addict, stressed and not expecting another pregnancy (you'd think I would have figured out how I got that way!), I smoked a few times with my 3rd child.  I've also heard of doctors weaning new mom's off because of the stress of quitting.  Please, please talk with your doctor about it.  Make an appointment now, don't wait until your next scheduled.  Tell them you need to speak about quitting and you want to hear that peanut's heart beating to give yourself peace of mind.  If they can't help you, you need to work to find another doctor.

Please keep doing your best.  You will face many struggles as a parent, but none so great as those that require a personal sacrifice or trip into what I like to call "uncomfortable land".  But you can do this.  Have confidence in your abilities and know that you, and your baby are worth the hardship.

Wishing you well and rooting for you,
Anige

Hey Breakingfree!!!

Welcome and congratulations on your decision to quit!  Yes, it is VERY important for you to quit for your baby's sake!  By doing so, you will be the "good" mommy!!!  Like others have said, don't get down on yourself!  Try to maintain a Positive Mental Attitude going through this journey and it will make the whole process more tolerable!!!

Read and learn here and post when you need the support!  You can do this!!  Keep telling yourself that!!!!  Also, like the program recommends...  reward yourself often!!!

I forgot all about the baby going through withdrawal.
Fortunately, when I was born, that wasn't an issue, as smoking was allowed everywhere, even in the nursery.
First thing I reached out for was a Lucky Strike.  They brought me a baby ash tray shaped like a ducky; it was so cute!
Then as I got older, whenever I finished a whole bottle, I got my Lucky Strike and ducky ash tray.
It finally got to the point where I couldn't eat my strained peas except for the promise of a nice smoke at the end of the meal.
Ah, the good old days....
