If you are trying to activate your instant messenger on the support centre, you need to click on the blue LAUNCH button above the discussions in the Forums screen. That will prompt you to add yourself in order to chat with others online.

I can see you online, but I can't figure out this instant messenger. There's been several times when I've seen people on but can't make that work.
