does it really take a year?

I gained 12 pounds or more then decided enough was enough. I now do (home) workouts 6 out of 7 days and I have lost all this weight in 4 months.
If you want to lose weight you must eat healthily AND exercise.
It involves some hard work.
Diets are merely a 'get rich quick' scam for the company who advertises them.
If you can quit smoking, getting fit and losing weight is EASY by comparison!

WELCOME BETS!  HI BELLE, I had to start walking (up to 2 miles an evening now) in order to keep the weight off.  I was starting to gain and I was eating only fruits and veggies. Now I'm eating fruit, veggies and meat/poultry again.  Dont give up on your quit because of a few extra pounds.  Do get exercise though.

deb 48,

It's very common to experience weight gain when quitting smoking. It's great to learn that you're going to use portion controle to help you maintain a healthy weight. Our sister site, HealthyWeightCenter.net offers great information and support and we encourage you to sign up and goin in on our support community.

All the best,

Hey Folks,

Well the weight thing seems like a common occurance...Ter--I, too have put on about 12 pounds in the last 5 months. I am a faithful exerciser...step, spin and weight lift--4--5 times a week....(and have alsways been--but breathing and circulation is now better)...

But--truthfully, I am eating more --like breakfast used to be a coffee and 6 or 7 smokes.....
No snacks after dinner--just smokes.....Another thing I used the smokes for was to keep my weight down....I didn't realize it--but it is true..

So--now I have breakfast & usually something lite after dinner....

My appetite is WAY improved....this will be my next focus--maybe in 6 months. In the meantime--I'm going to adopt some of BJs philosophies---portion control & back to chewing gum...

I am really hoping this is where the weight gain ends. My follow exercisers all stand by--"it's what and how much you are eating that is causing the gain".......hummmmm....maybe it's not the lack of smoking--but that we  need to find a new replacement other than food.

I am going to concentrate on both the quit and healthy eating (along with portion control).....not necessarily dieting just yet.

Staying quit is number 1 for right now:)

I whined and whined on here for a while after I quit because I gained 10lbs.  So now that I am comfortable with that and still trying to make it go away, I weighed myself at the gym the other day and I have gained 4 more lbs.  I have been eating some things I would not normally eat all the time, but I am ok with it.  I know that if I continue my healthy lifestyle and exercise then I know in about 5 or 6 months I will level out to some permanent place.  It's all ok!  It's nice to finally be able to say that.

Hey Belle!!!

If you want to stop the weight gain start exercising. Get your a bike, it does not have too be expensive and start using it as transportation ( example). You will feel great and you will get exercise. Or you can join a gym. Think about a sport that you would like...

Myself  I do both. I cycle every day to go work ( 45 min each way) and go to the gym 3 to 5 times a week. I try to focus on weight training. You will find yourself craving relief and with more control of your body..

Good Luck

Bets,

Welcome to the SSC and congratulations on deciding to kick the habit!

We strongly encourage you to prepare for your quit using the program. Quitting smoking is not only a habit, it's an addiction. This program is going to help you plan how to deal with cravings and more importantly teach you how to replace this old habit with a new one.

You'll also need to put into place a reward system. It should have three components: small one for after each craving, medium for the end of each smoke-free day and a bigger one for the end of each smoke-free week.

Start reading through the forums, you'll quickly realize that many have felt just as you do now and they are now non-smokers. You'll also be able to find a lot of tips and tricks to help you along the way.

Good luck & check back soon!
