Rain, the 3rd day was my 1st worst. I was ready to pull my hair out & I just had to SCREAM!!!! And I did. Most of the day. My phone coach called me the next day, out the blue, & she said the 3rd day was the worst for a lot of people. That explained a lot. Focus on tomorrow & it REALLY gets easier. Not much but 1 day at a time is all we can think about right now. For as much as I smoked, my supporters are so amazed at how great I'm doing. And so can you. rrains: Sounds like you are going through the toughest of times. The good news is that if you stick with it, you will never have to travel this way again. What you are experiencing is the very real and painful echos of addiction. When we smoke we do not tend to think of ourselves as addicts, and that is very much a part of the behaviour cycle that is the addiction. Right now you are going through withdrawal. In the beginning the initial experience comes as a bit of a shock to us when we finally decide to release ourselves from the bonds of a addiction. Do not be afraid of this, it is a sign that you are beginning to turn the ship around. It will not always be this way, but sadly for many of us we must go through this rather trying time in order to make ourselves better. Try drinking lots and lots of water. Also you will find that breathing deeply diminishes the craves in a most amazing way. Also get out and do something physical. That serves to both distract and at the same time increases the levels of certain neurotransmitters that make us feel peaceful. I promise you that you will not have a nervous breakdown. However, you will learn a great deal about yourself over the next few weeks. You will also learn how to adapt and grow. The key is to understand why you have such a desire for cigarettes and then learn new methods of dealing with yourself in a way that does not include smoking. Good luck to you. There are many good folks here who understand how difficult this can be and will offer you any and all support that you require. Becca...smoking is NOT a hobby, it is an addiction. I hope you come back and post here. Yes, the first day will be tough...many "firsts" are like that, but this can be done!! I smoked for 36 yrs and quit....don't beat yourself up over this, but know that you can do it, if you are really, truly ready to give this up. You have children. Do you want them to smoke when they grow up? Statstics show that most young kids smoking out there now smoke because one or both of their parents do. Just another thing that you might like to concentrate on. Sometimes, we are more willing to do things for our kids than we are for oursselves. I am so happy not to be a "stinky" Mom anymore!! And sadly, yes, both of my grown children smoked, because their father and I did. But, we all quit at the same time, so life is good and getting better every day, promise!! Hi Rains, I know I am late posting to this. I hope you are thru your first day. Every TIME you say NO it gets a tiny bit easier, and easier. When you say No go grab a reward. a bit of yogurt, a peanut butter cup.. something you like.. There the reward WILL make you Happy.. your brain thought the nicotine was making it happy.. Get a jug of bubbles .. blow bubbles with your kids. If you add a few drops of glycerine (very cheap) at most pharmacies to a bottle of bubbles. you can blow bigger bubbles that last way longer... sometimes the ice water wasn't quite enogh.. i chewed on ice chips.. or a popsicle is good.. Do it young... think of your children, your lungs getting all pink and healthy again.. their lungs getting all pink and healthy again. no dirty ash trays.. etc etc.... Rrains0006, Deep breaths will help to calm you. Next why is your patch not working?, check if it is sticking properly, check the expiry date on the package, look where you have it, it should not be on your chest close to your heart. Did you do the program here, if not, take some time and go through it. Also read all the posts you can here about quitting. If the candies aren't working try pranuts or gum or licorice or suck on a straw! Keep trying girl, it only takes three days to get the drugs out of your system. Becca, Hi! Don't let the triggers overwhelm you. Take each one as it comes - have the iced water beside you. Drink a good long drink of it. Get up out of your chair and go to the bathroom (or someplace where you are really private) and talk to yourself. "I will not let this freak me out! I will not smoke again, EVER!!..." Now, stand there and put your hands on your hips and take about 5 or 6 deep breaths - inhaling to the count of 5 and exhaling to the count of 4 and repata that sequence until you feel your shoulders release the tension... Go back to whatever you were doing and realize that giving in to a cigarette will only make you feel like crap inside three seconds... You do not smoke cigarettes anymore. Stay close to the site and ask for help like you did a few hours ago... Watch at HOME to see if anyone is in the IM and click on your "launch" button and talk talk talk about it!!
