Mary's Losing it.

Mary 40 days is no small thing. It is toughest in the beginning, but remember that you are forming new behavior patterns. That is probably the hardest thing any human can do. After all the old ones felt so comfortable and putting on a new set of clothes might seem akward at first, but eventually we get the fit just right...Keep up the great work, there are a lot of people here who are on your side and that is a very good thing. nonic My Milage: My Quit Date: 12/25/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 396 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 11,880 Amount Saved: $4,158.00 Life Gained: Days: 73 Hrs: 19 Mins: 31 Seconds: 38

Hi Mary. Good to see you back. If it's any consolation, I had a terrible time around the 40 day mark that lasted nearly a week. Some real full blown craves and depressed. It did pass and things have improved greatly since then. When you get past this I'm sure things will look much brighter. This is no easy task but we are doing it. You are doing it. Go get 'em. I think you are right on target Mary. Very soon, you will start to feel like the number of good days and bad days are about equal. Slowly and gradually, the good days will out number the bad...say around 100 days. Where I'm at now - about 200 days...my last bad day was a month ago. Just keep reminding yourself that this is a process, albeit a long one, but that you will soon be turning the corner, and it will look a whole lot brighter. Great job and keeping quit. Mary, You've hit that cross roads where it is no longer the physical addiction calling out....but the mental addiction reminding you of times past. Now is a good time to re-afirm the new you. Really take time when you get into bed to relax and think about all the positives from quiting and....who this new non smoking person being created should be. The old person is still familiar to you....and it is time to make the new person more prominent. Eventually the old person seems distant....and it's the new person you associate yourself with. I'm probably not making sense. We all tend to be driven to our comfort zone. Our comfort zone was being a smoker. Your at the point of your identity being a little lost. The more you work at loving the new you the easier your staying quit becomes. Make any sense. Your doing so great. 40 days is a very big acomplishment and your well on your way to being a winner. Mary, Please know, as it has been mentioned, that this is normal. You'll see as you continue to progress, those bad days will be fewer and fade in intensity. Just keep at it and don't forget your reward system! It's important to give yourself tangible as the benefits of quitting are not. Danielle, Bilingual Health Educator

Mary, This is the hardest thing to do and you ARE doing it! One day at a time. One simple statement that has helped me sooo much when I have a craving/urge/thought of smoking - "It's not an option". Plain & simple. This stops the thought in it's track and doesn't allow for the mental games I would tend to play (false rationalizations re: why I could smoke, etc). Anyway, this works for me. Do whatever it takes that works for you. And by the way, I often had involuntary movements - reaching for packs of smokes that didn't exist -- it's really bizarre - I would see my arm reaching and then stop mid-air upon the realization that there was nothing to reach for! You can do this Mary. You are doing this Mary!
