I have noticed the same thing, smoking really DOES stink! and I knew better, knew everyone could always smell "it" on me, but never did I realize just how strong the smell is to a non smoker! Hi to all you friends out there. I just have to post today to tell you that today I am so proud of myself having survived a night of partying till 5:30 in the morning and WITHOUT SMOKING. That is not to say that I was not tempted, believe me temptation, cravings and secondhand smoke were plentiful. But I did it! How I don't know. It was a full blown party with a lot of smokers present. I don't know if all the alcohol I drank increased my willpower or what, but I did not succumb. Apart from the pleasure of not having smoked there was the added bonus of not having a hangover the next morning. I don't know if it is the same for you but I notice that when I do not smoke I do not have such bad hangovers but I do tend to drink more when I am drinking. In order to help in my quit I had stopped drinking coffee and alcohol as these are both very strong triggers for me. However, I seem to be able to cope for the moment with the alcohol trigger. Nontheless I will stay off the coffee for the moment and keep drinking to a minimum. I must say that I miss neither the coffee nor the alcohol. One thing I did notice is that smokers stink and the atmosphere where smokers are is really sickening when you are not smoking. Now I really do sound like I don't want to sound, but there is no getting away from it, smoking is a disgusting habit. How can we be so oblivious to the horror of it, when we are smoking, and still crave to do exactly that. I guess that's what's called addiction. Anyway thanks to all of you for your help and I'm looking forward to the one month celebration just a couple of days away. You are right Freedom26 in as much as many of the ususal triggers are absent and therefore it is a little easier. However as I am here quite often, I also have some triggers here. Evening time in the hotel for example, both the bar and the restaurant are smoking areas. Alone with a book, smelling smoke from the table next to you!! There is not much to distract you from your cravings: Luckily I have held out, but there are times believe me when I could just �"'(-�_��) and then +l�ct����� just to get it out of my system. You mustn't forget that when you go back home you still have to face the many triggers that you have not dealt with yet - it's a bit like being on the patch really, you put off the final blow till later. You are very lucky to be away from home right now...I believe that is a change to routine to be in another country so it may be easier for you to set the goal of not smoking in another country. Sounds like you travel a lot but I know that being away from home is something that would help me. Don't pay any attention to all these other smokers that you work with or are around all day. You will miss smoking less and less as time goes on and appreciate more and more the fact that you don't have to go out to have one no matter where you are. Make sure when you are organizing breaks for your colleagues that you give them the opportunity to smoke and yourself the opportunity to do something other than smoke! I know that it can be difficult especially when in a group of majority smokers but you will start to notice that there are less and less smokers every day. I feel bad when in a group there is only 1 person that smokes....they have to go outside by themselves, etc but I don't wish I smoked so that I could keep them company..I wish they understood why it is so much better to be a non-smoker! You'll get over this hump....you've come this far...do whatever you can to distract yourself from these situations where you feel that you deserve a smoking reward. You do deserve a reward but holding out for a month to have a smoke as a reward will just reinforce you becoming a full time smoker again, and we all know how much you don't want that. Go ahead reward yourself....have a new or different meal in the country that you are in, buy a souvenier, go for a walking or site seeing tour, do whatever makes you feel good....but don't smoke! They just look so happy and content because they have put an end to their withdrawl symptoms. Nicotine has a very very very short half life. So, when you go a few hours without smoking, your nicotine levels drop pretty low, and you do begin withdrawls in between smoke breaks.. You get edgy and eaily stressed, and maybe antsy.. Do you remember that? Those folks just look so relaxed because they have put a stop to that. Cigs have no magic stress reliever - except to relieve the stress of withdrawls. At the time that I quit - i couldn't smoke enough to end the withdrawls. i was considering wearing a patch while I smoked to ease the pressure some. My only option was to quit and get the withdrawls over with. Look at my quit meter - 4 packs a day.. It was non-stop. I wouldn't go back to that for anything. When I had my "last one" for the day, and laid down in bed - I would get angry if I didn't fall alseep imediately, because then I would have to have another "last one" and would I ever get to sleep? If I kept my cigs on my night stand, I would wake in the night with something burning me because I had lit up in my sleep and dropped it in my bed. I still have the same mattress and it's full if cigarrette burns. It makes me cringe every time I change the bedding. Now - maybe your body wasn't as acidic as mine and you didn't burn off the nicotine as fast (Nicotine is an alkalai) and suffer withdrawls as fast as I did, but you can bet that you did have them when you went for periods without smoking. THAT is why smoking "took the edge off" or "relaxed me" or "eased the stress". You're over the hard part now - the nicotine is gone out of your body. Now the journey and the work begins. Now you learn new coping strategies, and now you learn to fix the problems that give you stress, and how to make sure you don't feel stressed by using preventative measures.. you organize and get grounded, and put your life together because you don't live behind a smoke screen anymore. It's a good thing - You are about to learn a lot about Deck, and just how much she is capable of! :) We're all very very proud of you!
