Well, good - i'm glad you're alright! You seem to travel a lot so I don't know where you work or anything, but I do see your point about the partners in crime. I think they should still have breaks - talk with them and let them know they will have to speek up because you don't have the addiction to tell you when it's time for a break anymore. you know? So long as they're smoking OUTSIDE on their breaks! :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 7/17/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 559 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 41,925 Amount Saved: $10,481.25 Life Gained: Days: 49 Hrs: 21 Mins: 43 Seconds: 41

Back again, just to finish off what I was rambling on about. I spoke to some people recently who had also quit, about dealing with smokers. As has already been said, most wanted to be polite about letting smokers smoke in their presence, but to their regret found themselves again in the situation of the one suffering most. I suppose when one thinks about it, having smoked in the presence of non smokers for many years, it is a little difficult to take that we suddenly become moralistic about the whole thing. I am in the strange position of being the boss, so that when I smoked I would happily organise breaks around my cravings. Now that I am not smoking it does seem a little unfair to my ex partners in crime not to allow them the time to smoke. Because quite frankly I can sympathise with them. On the other hand I recently spent Christmas vacation in Ireland, where it is totally forbidden to smoke in any enclosed space, but to be honest I cannot say I felt put upon by those making the laws. I can certainly agree that bars restaurnats and hotels are much cleaner and certainly smell a lot better than they used to. The downside is that if you are with a group of any size where the majority are smokers you will easily tire of the breaks in the evening due to people coming and going to get their fix. The famous pub atmosphere is no longer the same, as with no smoking laws, drinking and driving law enforcement, it seems a lot easier for many to buy in a couple of bottles and stay at home. Well I guess I have gone on quite enough for one day. Keep up the good work guys and looking forward as always to your posts, My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/6/2008 Smoke-Free Days: 21 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 735 Amount Saved: $273.00 Life Gained: Days: 3 Hrs: 15 Mins: 18 Seconds: 19

    Cigarettes Not Smoked

Hi everybody, nice to hear from you and some very interesting replies. I can understand the difficulties of quitting if your partner remains a smoker. One of the difficulties I have had in the past was that my significant other, smoked. We both quit together this time round and for the moment (fingers crossed) we are both holding out. Fortunately or unfortunately I am away from home a lot at the moment so we have been able to avoid difficult situations together. However, we have not been together either to congratulate each other or even support one and other through the difficult times. He also has the disadvantage of not having anyone around, like you guys, to share the difficulties with. French being his language it would have been nice for him to be able to participate in the French speaking forum but for some reason it is impossible to post on it at the moment. Strange but yesterday, I spent 12 hours travelling from Paris to Mexico, and I have rarely had so many cravings for a cigarette during a flight. This is a flight I have done very regularly in the past so I was quite used to not being able to smoke and therefore the cravings were quite minimal. However yesterday, in a situation where you know that no matter how much you want to smoke you can't I had the most horrific cravings. They were so strong that I guess I was quite lucky to have been locked away from all temptation at a couple of hundred feet above the earth. Today with the ususal jet lag I was awake at 5 o'clock this morning but the cravings seem to have diminished. I was able to take advantage of the hotel gym to occupy myself while the rest of the world woke up. Still with the quit - Oops - my battery is going on my laptop and I don't have the plug adaptor to connect to the electricity so I will sign off for now and get back to you later My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/6/2008 Smoke-Free Days: 21 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 735 Amount Saved: $273.00 Life Gained: Days: 3 Hrs: 15 Mins: 4 Seconds: 3

WOW, I forgot all about other smokers! I don't know anyone who smokes. The only time I see someone smoking is on the street and it makes an impact on me. I always say "That person is smoking!" Sort of like "That person is dressed like a clown!" That's how few people smoke. In my year of no smoking, I have gone to a casino and really not craved a cig any more than my normal and usual background craving. I have gotten used to that. I mean, I didn't want to run up to anyone smoking and been moved to bum a cig. Actually, there was a kind of freedom to going to a casino as a non smoker. You forget all the steps. Check to see if there is enough cigs to keep you going so you don't have to buy any. Make sure there is enough flame, lighter or matches. Find an ashtray, position everything to satisfaction THEN you're set to sit down. As a non smoker, all you do is pop money into the machine! Free to move around without even thinking about the nearest facilities. I even went to the verboten no smoking room. I can't tell you the times I have been forced to pay 8 bucks for a single pack of cigs to a hostess because I didn't want to get up. ...another thing I forgot to add. Chatting up strangers and meeting new people will happen anywhere you wish it to happen. They don't have to be smokers. In line at the bank or on an elevator, there are endless ways to meet people and pass a few minutes without smoking. I think you'll find that you have a lot of other things in common with people if you keep an eye out. I think in general our similarities outweigh our differences no matter where or what we are doing. How are you doing Deck? Iam very lucky about this because i was the last smoker in our family, the last to quit. Iam not around anyone who smokes unless i walk through it at outside at a store or out in public, when i quit i was living in Las vegas, and i dident even go to the casinos any more, i did anything to stay away from smoking. I have been called holyer than thou because i dont smoke and i dont want to be around breathing in someones elses smoke, if i still wanted to be around it i would still be smoking and getting that Nic Fix myself :) I think if you have friends that smoke and you can handle it , but if you cant thats your choice, just as its their choice to smoke, stay out of the cloud :) Tresa My Milage: My Quit Date: 8/8/2002 Smoke-Free Days: 1994 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 39,880 Amount Saved: $6,979.00 Life Gained: Days: 285 Hrs: 1 Mins: 6 Seconds: 0

Hi Deck, Great thread, alot of good replies. I have been there done that. I would like to keep this quit and I am going to do what ever possible to protect it. I have changed alot of things I do just to stay smoke free. I was not a very considerate smoker and I don't know any smokers who are. Some are polite and don't smoke around me but they don't stay around me long either. It's not that we are holyer than thou, we are trying to survive. Use all your survival skills and don't worry what anyone else thinks.
