Whilst in the bath (that patchouli does help!) I came up with what I think is the ultimate kev style analogy to explain a nicotine addiction to a lifetime non smoker, who cannot understand why people smoke, addictions or anything like that.
This is a group game if you like. How would you explain? Imagine a Normal Norman/Norm. who works hard, is a nice guy/gal, pretty unadventurous, and the closest thing he/she has come to an addiction is giving money or food to the alcoholic beggar on the street.
Well here's my analogy :
There are two players in this game of chess. On the white pieces we have SMOKEFREE and on the black pieces we have JUNKIE. Smokefree only came to play when you quit and before that Junkie used to move both pieces. Hence junkie always won! Now he's up against some competition and clearly doesn't like it. As you would expect, as junkie has been at the board a long time, he has his own set of rules. These are :
The aim of the game is to play for total control of the board (Kevins Mind)
Junkie can only checkmate smokefree when Kevin smokes
Smokefree can never checkmate junkie but he CAN capture most of his pieces
All other rules are normal chess rules.
Smokefree thinks ok, lets go. Even though I cannot checkmate him, I can maybe get him down to bare king. He should be no problem to contain then. And starts his first move. The first couple of moves show smokefree playing into a bad position. Then junkie gets over confident and starts making bad moves too. Now it seems that smokefree has the upper hand. He's captured a couple of junkies pawns.
Junkie is really not happy about this as you can imagine. He much preferred it when he was playing against himself. So he comes up with an idea to distract smokfree. He says 'Hey smokefree, look over there. Hey shes nice totty right!'. Smokefree, never one to resist investigation (thats how he decided to play chess with junkie in the first place) turns around to have a look. Sneaky junkie, now moves twice and captures one of smokefrees pieces. Smokefree is turning around to play and looks confused 'I am sure there was a knight there earlier!' he thinks to himself.
Anyway, by this time word of this hard fought game has got around and others have turned up to show support for their favourite player. The brothers MEMORY have turned up. The younger brother RECENT MEMORY has turned up and is supporting junkie, whilst their is a family dispute as OLDER MEMORY who remembers Kevin before he smoked has turned up supporting smokefree. Also on smokefree's side is HOPE (an optimistic girl), HAPPINESS (who likes nearly everything it seems), FRIENDSHIP (who is surfing the web maybe looking up what en-passant means or talking to other smokefree's) and CHILL (he's a really relaxed guy who likes electronica). Oh and who could forget LITTLE REWARD and BIG REWARD? They're a bit excitable and always shout 'pick me!' whenever they get looked at.
On junkies side, apart from RECENT MEMORY, we have DESPAIR (who slept with HOPE and then dumped her, he's not a happy chappy), ANGER (he's a bit tempersome sometimes, a good friend with IMPATIENCE who unfortunately could not make it today as he got run over trying to cross the motorway instead of using the bridge 50 meters down the road). JEALOUSY and ENVY are lurking around somwhere (they're still a little upset about not getting the chance with HOPE after DESPAIR told them that she was a bit to happy for his liking).
All of these have made it to the match and are shouting from the sidelines, except APATHY (who couldn't care who won) and BORDEDOM, APATHY's dog, who has seen everything and now wants to go home and chase the cats.
Sometimes, both junkie and smokefree hear the shouts and move accordingly, sometimes only one player hears. Smokefree also has the problem of having a hamster bladder and therefore spends a lot of time in the toilet. This gives junkie plenty of chance to make extra moves. However, although junkie is very smart and devious. Smokefree has help from FRIENDSHIP who has been getting advice from other smokefrees over the internet. FRIENDSHIP whispers the moves into the ear of smokefree who then turns what looks like a losing game into a more even one.
I think this game of chess is quite a battle right now and I think there will be plenty more twists and turns. With the help of smokefree's friends, in time he might have an upper hand.
Tune in next time to find out.
Hope you liked it. :)
