The perceived wisdom is that when you quit you should get rid of all smoking related items, including ashtrays.
However, I feel that ashtrays serve as mini waste bins and still have a role to play.
I still have an ashtray on the windowsill in my bathroom, the room is tiny (the toilet is in a separate room) and there is no space for a bin.
Now we have a smoking ban in all pubs and restaurants, most establishments have removed all the ashtrays, but it seems obvious to me that there is now nowhere to put all those little items of litter, the snack packets, empty sugar packets, the stray peanut that fell on the floor or table etc.
The French have an item called a "poubelle de table" which is a mini table bin, usually with a lid, but that seems too much.
Maybe the ashtray should be replaced with something similar to the ashtray labelled "litter bowl" ?
What do the rest of you think?
