Sarah and Hammer, remember that you can't smoke without making a conscious decision to smoke. I have found that the most difficult moments are the times when I allow myself to think about what I LIKED about smoking. If I focus on what I HATED about smoking, it is a lot easier to stay clean. It isn't always easy, but if you have your coping tools handy and you are truly committed to winning, you can do it. The rewards are many, and they are yours to be had just by choosing NOT to light the next cigarette. Self discipline grows as you practice it, and you can do it!! Hi Hammer, I suggest setting your quit date no more than a week out. The sooner you quit, the less time you have to dwell on it. I say just do it and don't look back, times a wasting! I was afraid to quit too, smokes were my best friend: They were there when I was happy, sad, hungry, full, tired, anxious, etc. I did go through a small depression during my quit but I just got off my butt and started jogging. There are all sorts of things to try and not everything will work for you. If something isn't working.... you need to try something different Good luck and keep us posted My Milage: My Quit Date: 5/8/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 91 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,547 Amount Saved: $382.20 Life Gained: Days: 8 Hrs: 4 Mins: 5 Seconds: 12

Hammer and Sarah, I think that it is good advice to start out in the morning as a non-smoker. Also, I drank a sickening amount of water and did whatever I could to just stay busy. Instead of gum, I sucked on lolli-pops. They are tasty and the stick made it seem like smoking. Most importantly I have been talking crap to myself! Who is in charge here?!?! You or the cigarettes?!?!?! You are not weak!!! Something like that, it must be helping, I have not even had one puff in 25 days. Stay strong, you can do it! Hey Hammer & Sarah, The nicodemon has a best friend. His name is doubt. If he can get you to doubt your ability to quit then you probably wont. The mind has a best friend. His name is reason. If he can get you to remember the reason you don't want to smoke then you wont. Best wishes to you both. Sarah, the funny thing is you can play tricks back on cravings. I have in the past said, yeah okay as soon as I am done with xy and z I will go have a smoke. By the time I was done the craving was gone. When the craving showed up, I said something to the affect, you snooze you loose! Do or say whatever is necessary to get your mind off it. I remember a couple months ago, having a real bad craving, going outside to my old smoking spot and going through all the motions of having a smoke with an imaginary cigarette. I sat there for about the same amount of time it takes to smoke then took some deep breaths and came back inside. My craving came back about 20 minutes later and said to me WTF!!!, my response was, "low tar". ;) You seriously ought to have fun with it, maybe a video documentary?

I agree that it is mind over matter but that mind is a very powerful thing and mine is already trying to talk me into going and buying another pack! LOL! Hammer, Read Allen Carr's book about not smoking.. It's really hard to quit if you don't want to quit more that you want to smoke.. Mind over matter. I am using the patch and this is my second quit in 12 months and it is much easier than the 1st time.. I KNOW that I can not have another puff for ever and ever ... And I am okay with this!! Just make up your mind and JUST DO IT!! Hey Hammer, Don't worry about quitting, it's not tuff staying quit is. I recommend cold turkey method, gum or patches are like a slow death. Here are some things I did that helped me: Stop smoking in the car Delay first smoke of the day break up routines Switch to a different brand (one that doesn't taste as good) Decide and WRITE DOWN why you want to quit Watch web videos on "Quit Smoking" Add to your reason to quit list Set your quit date (be realistic) Begin first thing in the morning (Wake up as a non-smoker) Affirm commitment to smoke by destroying remaining cigarettes Throw away ashtray. Throw away lighters. On quit day. Get some munchies to snack on Keep busy Visit board Review reason to quit list Post here. GOOD LUCK! Hi, Set your quit date and stick to it. Mine was set for today and when i had to rip up my cigarettes last night and throw them away it was really hard however if i wouldn't have i would have had one by now. So good luck you can do it.
