Beren, you won't need the pepper, there are other things that are helpful that are less "yucky". If you did the program go thru the breathing exercises. A good bunch of deep breaths really helps. Sucking on hard candies, sucking on a straw really helped me. Change up your routine, just switching little things around, I think I found that the most help! Beren, Some of the downer feelings you are experiencing is that your brain is now getting less endorphines than before. You were flooded with them as a smoker and so your brain shut of many of the receptors. Now that you don't have as much your brain needs to turn them on again. It is just your brain doesn't work at that fast a pace. It will turn them on....but everyone is at a different pace. That is why many doctors will prescribe anti-depressants when people quit as a temporary measure. You won't feel better right away. Usually as your body adjusts to such a chemical difference you feel worse for awhile. Hang in there and don't give up till you experience the freedom from smoking. Congratulations on quitting Beren! Protect your quit and so, if the pepper thing works, do it! My suggestion is just to keep plenty of water, and when you feel a crave coming on, inhale deeply and calmly repeat a mantra which will make you realize what you are trying to accomplish! You will get the hang of it, and yes, there will be some minor changes as you cut down and finally quit - but most are due to your body healing itself - just let nature work and you should be fine. The thing to always bear in mind is that everyone is different: quit different ways, felt different things but there is one constant and that is that everyone is here to support you. I quit cold turkey and had all sorts of things happen to my body and my mind and it was great to come on here and mention them because there was always somemone else out there who'd had the same problem. Congrats on day 1!! WOW! I went through what you did before I quit - when I cut down. That was actually how I decided to quit cold turkey instead of using the patches I had bought. I could tell that putting "some" nicotine in my body was going to be harder on me than just getting it out and being done with it. diclaimer: that's not a dig on NRT - whatever works, works! good morning.. thank you for all your replies, it is amazing to see how supportive people here are! this is my first day, 11 hours gone already(6 of them asleep:)). but the most difficult morning hours passed, and l am still feeling great. straightflop, you are right about symptoms being worse yesterday because l am starving myself, maybe it was not the best idea to reduce it at first, but l am sure l would not survive the day knowing l will never smoke at that point. l just did not let myself smoke during the day, focusing on the evening helped me a lot. and now, having practiced about the mornings is helping me. now sounds a little pathetic, l know:) Casey & Penitent, thank you for the warnings about seeing a doctor if the symptoms get worse, l would never do that assuming it was normal. l am feeling much better now actually. if it is getting easier day by day, l think l will be fine:) bresmama, l am not on any medication, l am going cold turkey, but l might need some antidepressants soon:) l didnt know that even switching could cause the symptoms, but now that l think, it makes sense. and sparky, l liked the hug thing:) l am trying to get water more than ever, and somebody just suggested to try to put a bit of black pepper in my mouth, lol. l dont like the idea, but l know that pepper will kill me, so the craving will stop:) if l need to, l will give it a try (l still wish it does not come to that point,lol) l will let you know. thank you all. have a nice day1

You probably feel worse now then you will when you quit. Right now you are starving yourself for nicotine and then giving it to yourself. Unlike when you smoked you just smoked when you thought of it. Now you are cutting down you are actually making it worse for your body. Chances are if you go cold turkey you will feel better. Either way congrats and being tired is part of the first few days for a lot of us. me included. There will be several little things that happen when your body starts to heal. It needs rest from all of the abuse, so being tired is part of it. It will need water, lots of water to flush the nasty stuff out. It will need hugs ;p It will need exercise, to become strong again. You can do this. Just remember NOPE - Not one puff ever.
