Way to go Mercy and Bear!!!! fyi, i read an article this week about addictions...scientists have identified this Alele 1 gene..or was it a chromosome?...anyways....in people who have a family history of addiction, those who then become addicted to subtances more often have this Alele 1 gene. I know it's true for me...when I find something I like, that is it....smoking, drinking, SSC....hmmmm...bacon, huh? Keep up the great work mercy and Bear! -aloha My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/22/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 79 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 3,160 Amount Saved: $537.20 Life Gained: Days: 11 Hrs: 0 Mins: 28 Seconds: 56

Marie & Bear, I'm proud of both you for quitting the NRT and you both are doing great with it! I used to work with a woman who quit smoking 5 years before I quit. Right before my quit, I asked her how she did it and she said she quit with the gum. And I told her my fears of getting addicted to the gum and not wanting to quit it (that's a lot of the reason I didn't use NRT when I quit) and she said that she STILL chewed the gum!!! AFTER 5 YEARS!!! She said she only used about a pack a week, but still!!! I got SO discouraged after that! I realized that she never really conquered her addiction and that really discouraged me into thinking that I wasn't going to be able to quit either... but then on day 5 of my quit, I found this wonderful site with SO many people who had quit for several years and were NOT still on NRT... so then I knew that it could be done! And here I am! :) I guess it's all in how you look at it! Crave the Quit! Mercy, Much has been written on this site about "addictive personality". I too was afraid of stopping the medication...and like you, I just quit it after forgetting it for a couple of days. I had a friend who quit, and became addicted to the gum (back when it was still Rx only). Then he switched to bacon (go figure) and then to diet coke (there are worse things, I guess). I don't know what he is addicted to now, if anything. Maybe he got over all of the addictions. At the risk of starting another paralyzing thread, I'm glad you gave up the gum. Maybe some of us do just switch one addiction for another, no matter how harmless. Myself? I am watching it closely, but I could become addicted to chocolate...especially every day at around 3:00 PM. Got to have my "fix". Keep the marvelous quit going. It's so much better than I ever imagined...how about you? Hey guys. Today finishes day 3 of no gum at all. I was using a half piece in the morning and a half a piece in the evening. How stupid is that? Someone here wrote me a story about their son and his binky. It hit home with me and I realized it is just a "false security blanket". I was chewing those half pieces like it was medicine and that it protected me. I was actually SCARED to give it up. What's with that? Nothing major happend to me other than I thought about it occasionally a little more. Will it end soon????? Just need to hear it. Thanks guys.
