Chantix...Day 1

17 years ago 0 706 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Hi Angela... well.... over the past 6 months or so I have been trying to cut back.. with the thought that I could wean myself of cigs... I stoped smoking in my house even (and man does my house smell better!). Then I noticed that I was starting to smoke more.. Then about 3 weeks ago I got really sick and had a bad asthma attack (the first and only asthma attack I have ever had). Well, the doc told me that day that I needed to quit now cause he was starting to see changes on my chest x-ray. After a week I was feeling better but still having pain in my chest.. I knew then that I needed to get Chantix. I work in a hospital and our pulmonary doc is giving out Chantix like it is candy so it was easy to get. I have been smoking about 1/2 a pack to a whole pack a day the past seven days. But I have noticed that instead of smoking a full one, it would be a half and I wouldn't want anymore. That was a nice feeling. I think I was day 4 when I noticed that they tasted different.. I actually put one out after 2 puffs... tasted awful. Then today noticed that they don't have much of a taste at all.. and they don't seem to really be doing much for me. So, I really feel the Chantix is going to make this much much easier. Like others have said, you still have to have the will to quit, but this will help with the withdrawls. Yes I am pretty nervous tonight.. but I am ready to take control back. We can do this!!! Just a few more days until YOUR quit day.... I tell you, it CAN be done. I was a 3 pack a day smoker for 34 years and I quit (with the help of Chantix) and you CAN too! Hi Lou! I can only imagine what the "night before" will be like! How many cigarettes are/were you smoking up until day 7? Today is day 3 for me. Yesterday was pretty "normal"...about a pack. Today I made a real effort to cut back and of now, I'm at 11 for the day. That's close to a pack less. I still don't have that "it tastes nasty" taste when I light a cigarette, but I do notice the urge to smoke is less. Good luck tomorrow! You'll be great! I'll be thinking about you and sending all good thoughts your way. Post and let me know how it goes! Hi Angela... I started the Chantix a week ago.. Tomorrow is my 8th day.. my quit day. I don't know if everyone has the "I'm afraid to quit feeling." but I can say I do. I have mentioned in my thread, "Hello, I am new here." I am even more nervous tonight knowing that as of tomorrow I will be a non-smoker. I have smoked for 15 years and don't know if I know how to be a non-smoker. One thing I have found is everyone here is very supportive and they have made me see I can do this. Stay around and read all you can and post lots.. this is a great site with great support. Toxin, Welcome to the support community and please make sure you look around. Use the program along with your doctor's recommendation to see the difference it can make. Always check with your doctor or pharmacist regarding dosages and side effects. Do also search for the word Chantrix and see all the information that the members have provided. We are always here for support and knowledge and can make a difference :) Josie _____________________ The SSC Support Team.

Angela - just wait. After the Chantix starts to build up in your system you will discover that the cigs will lose their effect on your brain - and for me, at least, it tasted like I was smoking a plastic cigarette! You'll be free soon. Just do your "homework" now. Angela, I too was 'afraid to quit', now after being a non-smoker for 2+ months I am free and wondering what in the world was I afraid of? I think I was afraid of the unknown; afraid of what life was like without a cigarette in my hand. I too used Chantix--and am an advocate!! I went thru a period of greiving, can you believe it? I actually greived the loss of my cigarettes. Seems strange to say, but I think it helped; although I still get a deja' vue feeling regarding smoking. I'm so happy I was able to get rid of those nasty cigs. finally!! Keep up the faith and you too will be a Non-Smoker!!! You go girl!!! Cigarettes Not Smoked

Angela, Just remember that the chantix program recommends that you let the medication do it's work and continue smoking during the week before your quit date. Don't worry, by the time that date comes around, you'll be amazed at how your interest in cigarettes has changed. Just make sure you have done the workbook (at the left) and are prepared for your quit date. Honestly...it works! Keep posting and reading! Wow guys...thanks for all the support and encouragement! I thought today would be so much better than yesterday since I'm usually so busy at work. WRONG! Yesterday, without even thinking about it, I smoked about half the "norm". Today, I'm back to the usual. But...I guess the good news is I've identified all of my triggers. And while Chantix will help, I still need to say "no thanks: when the gang heads out for a smoke. Tomorrow, it's'a new day! Thanks again! (see..sitting here reading your emails and typing this is one less cig I've had!)
