Mercy I am just like you, only worse if that is possible. I wory about alot of diseases that could get me, and whats worse, I am in the medical field! I quit smoking awhile ago, and I had thoughts every day about some kind of caner. But you know what, my 39 year old cousin was recently diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer. I thought, thats it, Im done with making myself crazy, I am just going to enjoy my life the best way I can, and know that I cant worry about the future. Cut yourself some slack, and put things into perspective! Mercy, That's right, believe in yourself and your choice to quit smoking. We can't do anything about tomorrow just today....You're going to be one of the great quitters.. ;) Sunshine My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/7/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 439 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 7,478 Amount Saved: $1536.5 Life Gained: Days: 64 Hrs: 12 Mins: 28 Seconds: 36

Thank you guys!! I appreciate you comments. I will try very hard not to obess. AT least I know I am not the only one that has it on their minds. I just felt it has been on my mind too much. I will try to think that I may have prevented something from happening by quiting. Who knows...maybe I have quit in time. mercy, I'm a little bit older than you so that means I'm a little bit wiser! LOL It's hard to deal with obsessing... but the others are right. None of knows what is going to happen in the future and we can't control it anyway. So best to live today in the moment. This is all we've got. Try substituting those thoughts with gratitude that you were able to quit and are able to eat healthy and do the other things that are important to live a long and healthy life. Mercy, I believe we all quit out of fear. Then this fear carries over into our quit. I was very fearful because I had smoked many years. I had lots of tests done including a chest x-ray. So far so good, but I know how you feel if some little pain happens cancer is the first thing you think of. I pray that you will soon get the peace of mind you deserve. Your 60 days are awesome!! :) Sunshine My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/7/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 439 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 7,477 Amount Saved: $1536.5 Life Gained: Days: 64 Hrs: 12 Mins: 14 Seconds: 46

    Cigarettes Not Smoked

Hi Mercy I worried about it when I smoked and I worried about it when I was quitting. I seemed to develop new symptoms to worry about during the first part of my quit. Now, each day as I get healthier, I don't have nasty coughs or chest pains or all those other problems. I hope that gradually your fear will be replaced with the ability to enjoy your new healthy body. First of all, I am sooo sorry that you are stressing this much. You quit. Take some time and be proud of yourself. Cancer or no, you have given yourself a much better life and deserve to enjoy every minute you can. That said, I don't really obsess, but I do worry. A lot. And like you, the thought of getting tested does not appeal to me, because I am more afraid to know than not know. But ask yourself this, would finding out make you want to smoke agian? Would it make it OK to smoke again? You may be surprised with the answer. Now, just because I always think the worse....even if you, or any of us, found out now we had cancer, would that make quitting the wrong thing to do? No. It means we won't be dying and killing ourselves faster. We won't be dragging the oxygen around the hospital parking lot looking for a place to smoke. We won't be going through withdraw while we are fighting for our right to live. We have already started this battle and there is no going back, not for me at least. So, even if I was sick, I would still be so happy I quit, even if still disappointed, angry, and all the other emotions I can't even imagine would go along with it. But for now, I just have to love that I quit. For me, not for something I may have already lost. Please let me know if I can help. Hi everyone! In some ways I hope I am the only one going through this.....and yet in other ways I hope I have some company with this obsession. I am posting this in lieu of some cancer posts. Before I quit it was on my mind constantly. Getting cancer. I have read about people that quit...and just didn't do it soon enough. I feel I am obsessed with fear that I aquit too late. I suspose if I was in my 30's...even 40's I may not feel this way. But I am 53. Every little pain I worry about. If I feel slightly short of breath in the steamy shower I think..."cancer". I suspose in a way the obsession is good if it puts the fear of God in me to not smoke. But....I hate the worry. I know some of you may say get a chest xray. I know I would be way toooooooo fearful to find out. I can just see the doctor telling me there is a spot on my lung. Does anyone else obsess about this. Is this part of the quit? Any encouragement would be so helpful.
