Hi Trish. A suggestion for the bad times. Get some cinnamon sticks. You can hold them like a cigarette and even draw on them. I've got a bottle by my computer, one by my bed where I watch TV, and one in my purse. I'm only on my 4th day of Chantix which is great! I've been able to cut down already and am actually looking forward to my quit day but I also know I'll still have to deal with those sneaky urges and I think the cinnamon sticks are going to help. It's worth a try. Hang in there!! I am on Day 6 of Chantix and day 2 of being smoke-free, after 20 years of smoking 1/2 to a pack a day. I have been trying to cut way back for a long time but could never quit. Too many associations with smoking I guess. I too have used everything except Zyban. Never tried it but didn't hear alot of good stuff about it. Anyway, Chantix is working alot better than anything else I have tried. I could never make it past day 1 of quitting. I had to have one. It didn't really help that I have a husband who is a very heavy smoker. But he is banned to outside. We have had smoke-free home and cars out of respect for the kids. But,I am proud to say that along with Chantix and my will-power I have made it to Day 2. TRISH, my day 11 was an agony, I had panic attacks and felt worst than ever. Then I became aware of how strong was my dependency and how my body was manipulated by cigarettes. I got very angry and that gave me a further reason to go on being a never-again-smoker! Trish, one of the best things I found to do when I was getting kicked around by a really bad crave was to COME HERE! Just like you did. I read and read and read, and it all reminds me of how glad I am to be an ex-smoker, why I quit, and how if you just give in to just one, you're actually giving in to thousands of them. Don't. Give. In. Hold tight, it will get better. I'm only on day 29, I had a really tough week last week, but now that I'm on the other side of it, I am so glad I didn't give in. It isn't perfect by a long shot, but it is a whole lot better. It will be for you, too. Hi Trish, The anxiety you are feeling is right on target of how we feel as this creepy addiction plays mind games with us. Doctors can prescribe meds to help that. If you don't want to take a pill: get out and get some exercise, try to get enough sleep, practice good nutrition, drink plenty of fluids, take deep breaths...these cravings will pass within a few moments. Remember that each day nicotine free will add up, and those cravings will get further apart and eventually will disappear. I agree, Week 2 had some unbearable days. If you can afford the time and money, go get a massage. I swear it was the one thing that saved me from breaking down -- all that attention and relaxation was the perfect antidote, and the feeling lasted a few days afterwards. Find a massage therapist who uses a gentle technique -- the last thing you need is someone pounding on you and causing pain! Good luck. Trish, Day 10 was the worst for me too. I was feeling fine for a while and then BAM! I got hit hard on day 10... I think part of it was that I thought that the worst was over, and when it wasn't, I got really discouraged and craved a lot. Then, I posted here on this site that day 10 was the worst day I'd had so far, thinking that everyone would tell me that I was crazy and that it shouldn't be that hard for me if I was 10 whole days in... but you know what I got? I got A BUNCH of people telling me that week 2 was the hardest week for them too and that this is completely normal. WHAT?!?! I thought that it was supposed to get easier after time!!!! NOT HARDER!!! But the fact is that it DOES get easier... but the cravings and smoking thoughts don't just magically go away after a week... no matter how much we want them to! :) Just hang in there. Do all of the suggestions that Katy mentioned and remember to REWARD YOURSELF!!! That ALWAYS makes me feel better! :) Rewards remind our brains that quitting is a GOOD thing and that we are not denying ourselves anything. Reward yourself for 10 awesome days!!! Trish....just a few suggestions of things maybe you haven't tried?? 1. Keep physically busy when at all possible...and if not, have a list of things to do when/if a craving comes on. 2. don't let yourself just sit and "think" about smoking of "wish" that you could smoke. Dwelling on it intensifies cravings...this can be known as negative or junky thinking 3. Try to think "positive" thoughts about not smoking....positive involves why you want to stay stopped and what you are gaining by doing so. the negative can easily creep in if you aren't on guard with plans 4. Lots of handy snacks....a flip top sports water bottle filled with icey water (handy at all times) also straws......you can fiddle with these things with your hands/fingers....and they can easily replace the hand to mouth business that smoking involved. 5. rewards and treats. VERY important part of quitting. they will help you stay focused and looking "forward"...it's important to always be headed forward....behind you is the smoking past and it's dangerous to go there. 6. PRIDE....let yourself be proud of what you are gaining....this is done for YOU...and BY YOU....it's a quite individual endeavor to stop smoking...you need to look often at your stats...remember and plan for those rewards....realize that by not smoking you are taking CONTROL of your life. I don't know about you, but I smoked for years.....before I quit, almost all of my time was taken up by the addiction...if I wasn't smoking, I was mentally working on WHEN and WHERE I could smoke next. My addiction totally controlled my life....getting it back wasn't easy....but I accomplished it.....you can to. Refuse to believe otherwise.
