Need help with smoker in the house

17 years ago 0 763 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
I too quit with a smoking hubby. and yes it's hard to stop when you know someone else is smoking....Yeah the quit is a personal thing....it's just about "you".....but right beside you is someone that is such a part of your life and they haven't chose to stop!.....I mean they have smokes! smokes may be right there-where you can reach them!! and even if they aren't you "know" your mate is smoking....and it makes "you" think about it even more!! Personally? I cut my hubby pretty much out of my spare time for a few weeks....I quit having coffee with him or anyone else that smoked....hell, I just quit coffee, cause it made me want to smoke! lol I did a lot of ranting and raving....but I kept it to being about "me" and how I was feeling. My hubby WAS supportive, in just a couple of days, he quit smoking in front of me....he never left cigarettes or lighters just "laying" around for me to see. I busied myself with cleaning my home and car of the effects of smoking for years.....that job will keep a person busy.....it will also remind you of the vileness of a nicotine stained existance! so basically, I am saying what you already have to know...the quit is yours and it is in reality for YOU and no one else. Tie a knot in it and hang on for dear life (cause that's what this is about is your LIFE) oh yeah, I should also mention.....within 6 months of my quitting? all the smokers and chewers(4)in our family had given up tobacco.....and we all remain free from it today....I like to remember that "I" started that trend....way back in jan of 2002...what they all needed was an example to follow.....being that example was an added bonus to my quit.......hooray for ME ;p Katy

I was told I could either quit or die, essentially. Hubby and I both quit May 23, 2006, with patches. His quit was uneventful and successful and I thank him for quitting for and with me. I slipped and struggled after a 70 day quit and fell into a full relapse. Quit again and just struggled, went from patches to Chantix. I knew I HAD to quit. I felt so guilty for smoking when he had quit for me, so I was determined to truly quit. It's hard to quit with a smoking spouse, and it's hard to smoke with a quitting spouse. Keep the quit---he just might follow your lead! Thank you all so much for this, it really helps to know that I am not alone here! I'm reading, reading, and READING, and I'm trying to incorporate all of your suggestions. It's been alot harder than I expected (quitting), and I'm sooo glad to have all of you here. I quit almost a week ago and my husband still smokes. He is very supportive of me and my quit. For whatever reason it's not bothering me when he smokes. It doesn't make me want a cigarette at all. I am hoping that because i made it he will make the leap also into being smoke free. jan My Milage: My Quit Date: 4/22/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 6 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 135 Amount Saved: $30 Life Gained: Days: 0 Hrs: 18 Mins: 50 Seconds: 1

I posted some of this on her introduction thread, but happy to share again. My husband continues to smoke but has been supportive of my quit. Before I quit we never smoked in the house or while our kids were in our cars, so smoke smell in my house has not been an issue. I do notice that when he drives my car he will smoke, but I think it is more out of habit than spite- when I get in and smell that stale smoke smell I am just thankful I don't smell like that anymore! When I find something interesting or very touching on this site I share that with him. I do not though in any way pressure or suggest to him that he should quit. I think we all have to quit on our own terms when we are ready. I have actually been very proud of myself on several occasions when I walk into the garage- and right past his smokes- and go on about my life. Our will to remain smoke free has to be stronger than our will to smoke. Best of luck to you need2quit! JT, Great support and great topic! Communication is key throughout this journey. So take the time to come up with a plan with your partner. The weather is looking up and an option may be to go outside with the habit and keep it there :) Josie _____________________ The SSC Support Team.

Hey Gang, Need2quit is one of our new Non-smokers. Yeah. I know many of you have had this scenerio, you quit and your spouse doesn't.:8o: A lot of you have been very successful even with this challenge facing you. Can you all offer her advice please? I know that we all want to help her be victorious. We all know how helpful it is to hear from someone who has been in a similar situation. Thanks my friends. You know I think you are all the greatest.
