hey JQ. All quits are diffarent. First month was hell, sencond moth was ok. When I hit that 120 day mark, I started feeling really good. My hubby still smokes, it does not even phase me any more. I rarely think of smoking anymore. I went to the smokiest night club ever,recently. All I was thinking about was how I could not breath. I for a stray moment thought of smoking.(I then got burned by a drunk guy) yes the thought was quickly replaced with....."WHAT ARE YOU STUPID OR SOMETHING" All those coping skills you use quite often in the beginning. They do get ingraned in your brain. So even a thought can be quickly destroyed the further you get. You have to remember always that not smoking is the only way to save your life. Also the only way to live. AND the Absolute best thing you can do for yourself. Yes everyone is different. Some times we have to borrow steps from our co-quitters of other addictions. When you look at my quit meter is will show that I haven't had a cigarette in more than a year but at the same time I concider myself having just one day under my belt. I have not a cigarette today so I am a non-smoker today. Sometimes thats all I worry about. Just today. Tomorrow is another day and next year is another year that I don't have to think about today. JQ I am about in the same place that you are with regard to stopping, and I really don't like to think about it much...I generally just practice being a non-smoker and knowing that smoking is not an option ever...If I were to speculate, I think that it is likely that we will have ghost memories for a long time...However, I am sure that you already feel it as just a thought and not that cold steel need that it has been in the past... A couple of years ago I quit for 4 months, and by the third month I was very comfortable as a non-smoker. I did start smoking again, but not because I was wracked with cravings. By that time, I was rarely even aware of any cravings. But, as stated, it happens differently for different people. I've talked to some people who had an ongoing problem with cravings for a couple of years. I have cravings every day. They are worse since I stepped down the NRT. I'm trying to taper off that and am down to three a day. I have only a few days before the sticker on the calendar says to stop completely. I'm a little apprehensive about that. My husband who didn't use anything almost never thinks of smoking anymore. I'm the problem child. JQ, Like Pam said: It depends on who you are. First I think the positive quitters are over it sooner than the negative quitters. If you want the quit to be hard, then it will be hard. Mind over matter remember? Second, it has something to do with triggers. The longer you are quit, the less triggers you walk into. Yesterday I was painting a mural in my hall and I was really busy and suddenly I thought to myself: When this flower is finished I take a smokebreak. I haven't smoked for almost 1 year and I realized I hadn't painted a mural since I quit. Odd isn't it? That was a trigger but since I knew that I could laugh about it. That's how it works, knowledge is power. JQ, That's a very personal question and will vary from person to person. I've known some people that after 3 months, they aren't t thinking about smoking at all... same with 6 months. At 6 months, I was still thinking about smoking every single day and was pissed at myself over the fact that I was not "over" this addiction yet. I guess for me, true freedom came at about a year and a half. Then, I rarely craved, I was able to go out with smokers (was even dating a smoker) and was completely fine with not smoking, even when others were smoking heavily around me. Tonight, I went out and sat next to a smoker who smoked my brand and my flavor and everything! And I didn't smoke a very common brand, so to see somebody smoking MY brand was completely strange to me. Did I think about smoking? Yes, a little. Did I WANT to smoke? Not really. Did I smoke? HELL NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Crave the Quit! By biggest question now that the general knee-jerk craving is kind of under control and quitting is at this stage not that bad (there are moments). When do we get to the point when we dont think of it as often as we are not, or at all. Is that 1 year, 0r 2, or 5.
