What is with this insane gain?

Windy, Jean, and Casey--thank you for your kind words and concern. I am feeling a bit calmer about this all today, and I am not going to give up my quit without a fight. Hopefully my doctor will come up with some remedy or explanation tomorrow. My doctor has been on my case to lose weight for the past 3 years, and I had finally reached a weight that we were both comfortable with, about 10 lbs more than ideal. I remembered that once before my scale showed an increase, but when the doctor weighed me there was no increase, so maybe the problem is my old scale? I'm not noticing that much difference in my clothes, so maybe the scale is the problem. I bought a new one yesterday just to be sure. It confirms the higher weight, but no additional gain today. If my doctor's scale doesn't show a huge increase tomorrow, I will know it was the scale's fault and that it was lying to me all along. Jean--I have read that Wellbutrin can cause weight loss in some people, so I guess it is possible that it could prevent gain. That could explain the huge gain after stopping. I'm hoping the lying scale is the explanation, because I don't want to take Wellbutrin again. Whatever the cause, we just did another 4 mile walk this morning, and dinner will be a nice fresh salad! For lunch and snacks there are plenty of raw carrots. There's got to be a way around this weight issue, and I intend to find it! I'll let you know what the doctor says tomorrow. I'm glad you said you are seeing your doctor on Thursday because with all that exercise you are getting, your daily calories at 1500 which is very low considering all of your activity and then all that water! There must be a correlation between stopping the Wellbutrin and the instant weight gain of 10 lbs in only 7 days. Just a thought - Did the Wellbutrin increase your metabolism? Might be a question you could 'google' and get an answer to. Please keep us updated on this as now I'm very curious about this odd situation you are experiencing. And yes, I know that our metabolism does change when we stop smoking.. however to suddenly change well into several weeks? And the weight appearing right after stopping the med. Hi Karen - I know that weight-gain has been an issue for many of us at sometime during our quit...but please read lots - For many of us, it was temporary (A change in diet and exercise helped us to lose the pounds we gained) Your calorie intake is great but I'm assuming your metabolism has slowed down (It happens to most of us) Did you add exercise to your routine? Going back to smoking is not an option...even if you lose weight, you will lose your health too. Smokers don't look healthy! Smoking affects our complexion, our teeth, our hair AND we don't smell good. We are all supporting each other to get the weight off...With the help of you Doctor (plus I'd be glad to send you my Sadistic Fitness instructor)...you can lose that weight AND be healthier than you ever were before. When I quit smoking for a year about 6 years ago, I gained 40 lbs almost overnight. I couldn't stand it, and no diet or exercise seemed to work. I finally gave up my quit to get my weight under control again. It took a while, but for the past three years my weight has been steady--10 lbs over, but steady. This quit was going great--no weight change the first couple weeks. Then I stopped taking Wellbutrin a week ago, and I have gained 10 lbs in 7 days! How can this be happening, when I have maintained a daily diet of about 1500 calories (tons of raw carrots), ten 12 oz glasses of water daily, and a daily walk of 3 to 5 miles!!!! The other amazing thing is that the weight seems to be all around my midsection. I'm having this deja vu feeling that my weight is again out of control and that nothing I do will stop the gain. I'm even having those little nagging thoughts about smoking again to regain weight control. I will see my doctor Thursday, but if meanwhile anyone can put this into a better perspective or share some tips for getting back in control, I would certainly appreciate your help! Well, I think I got the answer from my doctor today! According to her scale, I have gained 4 lbs in the past month, and my new scale shows the same weight as hers. Apparently my very old scale was lying to me--it was reporting 140 when it should have reported 146. I did often wonder why I weighed more at the doctor's office, but I decided to believe my own scale because it was a lower number! When the old scale was somehow jarred into accuracy, it appeared that I had gained more than I really had. I can accept the 4 lb weight gain and work to lose it, so my panic is over. I also learned that Wellbutrin works as an appetite supressant for some people, and the doctor thought that might have helped me not gain while I was taking it. Sooooooo....back to the smoke-free calorie counting and water consumption and walking walking walking! :) Karen My Milage: My Quit Date: 4/6/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 27 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,100 Amount Saved: $162 Life Gained: Days: 3 Hrs: 14 Mins: 12 Seconds: 53
