I have not needed an alarm clock for years. I always wake up between 5 and 5:30 every day. Smoking, not smoking, makes no difference. Did you know that before you fall asleep if you close your eyes and picture a clock at a certain hour you will wake up naturally at that time? Try it, it works. I've had to get up at 3 am to catch a plane, without a clock at all. I closed my eyes and pictured a clock not a digital but a clock with hands pointing at 3;00 and woke up exactly on time. I too experienced some strange sleeping patterns. For the first week or two I woke up every hour to go to the washroom. First at 2:00, then 3:00, then 4:00....But eventually things did go back to normal. Now I am sleeping pretty good and it's only been 50 days since I quit. I am dealing with some other side effects.......but I'll leave that for the weight gain discussions... Bottom line is that it will get better. Hang in there! sweeteedon, I can't find the posts now but if you went back far enough you'd see that I suffered the exact same experience and it went on for a long, long time! With me, I distinctly remember waking at around 4.00 every morning. Nearly 3 years later, I can still see the LCD of the radio alarm shining brightly 4:08, 3:59, 4:05, 4:00!!! and I can still remember thinking "Oh, not again!" It was annoying at first but I rationalised that it was a small price to pay for the quit and far better than smoking!! I also got to see the sun rise and listen to the dawn chorus starting up and that's not a bad thing, even in winter!!! Tough it out and make of it what you will, that's all I can say! Oh and I would recommend that you don't even consider sleeping tablets. All the Best Penitent d1008 :)

I'll try that tomorrow with 9.00 a.m firmly pictured in my mind just before I fall asleep - if it works I'll be 2 hours late for work!! Penitent d1009 :)

Hate to tell you this all, but as a follow-up to my earlier post, I haven't slept to the alarm since I quit in 2004 and I used to be a head-on-pillow to alarm sleeper!! For some, sleeping may never be the same again. I have accepted it. Cigarettes Not Smoked

Sweeteedon, When you first quit or cut down, you may find it difficult to sleep as long as you used to. Two things can cause this are: As a smoker your sleep may have been interrupted by constant coughing and/or difficulty breathing. When you stop smoking, your body gets healthier and the sleep you get is more restful. So if you wake up suddenly at 5:00 a.m., you may think you are a victim of insomnia. You're probably not! Your body has probably had all the sleep it needs. Smoking drains your body's energy. When you quit smoking you regain this energy. You may need fewer hours of sleep. How long will this last? The first few weeks after quitting. Tips to help: Try making sure you have a regular sleeping schedule. If you wake up in the middle of the night do some light stretches, or read a book to help you get to sleep. If you have a symptom that persists or seems worse than you expected, you should immediately consult a doctor. Its possible that your smoking has been masking symptoms of some illness, and when you stop smoking the symptoms abruptly become noticeable. Josie ____________________ The SSC Support Team.
