When am I quit ??

17 years ago 0 519 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Some of us will be non-smokers and some of us will remain smokers who don't smoke. Like alcoholics. An alcoholic is an alcoholic whether they have a drink or not because they are only one drink away from a binge. Some may never want to have another drink. None can drink. I believe I will always be a smoker who isn't smoking today. After years of quitting and going back I have learned one thing, I am one puff away from a carton. I can never tempt fate. Fate tempts me. Up until today (today is very bad) I was thankful for the few minutes at a time I didn't want a cigarette. I know that the demon is out there, waiting for me and may always wait for me. I know that defiance will get easier, but it will always remain defiant. I know as a new quitter I have not a lot of room to comment but when I read your post I knew that "I am a non-smoker"...ya know why? I am never going to smoke again. To me that is a non-smoker. I don't feel like I am missin anything, that might be a note worthy thought as well. Hi Everyone, I know I havn't been posting much lately but I don't feel that I have much to add to what has been going on. Anyway here is my dilemna..when am I quit ?? a strange question perhaps especially when I see my quit meter at 144 days. But I don't feel quit. I do not feel suffciently confident to say "I am a non-smoker". I have failed so many time before. I do not want to tempt fate again only to fall flat on my face. I hope somebody can understand this. I am in a very strange place. the facts are that I have not had a cigarette in 5 months. FIVE MONTHS !!!! I should be happy. I should feel confident that I have kicked the demon. Problem is, I don't. I smell a cigarette and think "that smells good, I could go one of them". At other times I see somebody smoking and think "you poor bugger". It is confusing. A friend told me "yes you are quit" wish I could believe it. I want to be confident enough in myself to be able to say that proudly " I am a non smoker"...just can't say it yet...I might fail...I might end up looking like a big idiot again. Is this my final big hurdle ?? Is this the last stage ? a final realisation and acceptance that I have won and finally I am free of the addiction. I would love to accept it. is anybody else in this place ?? I so want to celebrate and really feel deep down that I do not smoke any longer ! cheers Kiwikeith My Milage: My Quit Date: 9/29/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 144 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 3,620 Amount Saved: $1670.4 Life Gained: Days: 21 Hrs: 17 Mins: 20 Seconds: 20

Thank you all for your input into this facet of quitting. You know, at the end of last September when I last smoked this whole situation would have been the very least of my worries. The very though of having been smoke free for 5 months would have been almost unbelieveable, but here I am still smoke free. I suppose that this is going to take a shift in perception and that occurs differently depending upon the individual. One thing I am certain of. there is no way that I am ever going through this quit process again. There is no way that I am ever going to have to rest my quit meter. There is no way that I am going to smoke again. I guess that makes me quit ! Now I have to believe it. Thank you all....roll on Tuesday !! Hi Kiwi I've been thinking about your post all day. IMO (for what it's worth) I see Nicodemons tricks written all over your words. Close those back doors my friend. You have spent too many years being robbed of your confidence. You have shown nothing but courage and lots of confidence to get as far as you have. You're right..... BELIEVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!! it is so. Keith, I think I get what you are asking. I know that well past the one year mark I still referred to myself as "quitting". It was still a current process. I was (reasonably) confidant that I would never smoke again, but I still didn't actually feel quit. I think as long as you actively and deliberately need to use your coping tools, you are still in the quitting process. I'm not sure at what point I started thinking of myself as actually "quit", but I am definately at that point now. I am not quitting....I have quit. Kiwi, it will come. Whether it will come on a Tuesday, I don't know. But, if you started smoking again it would never come, so you just have to hang in there and wait for it. Remember one day at a time...and one of those one days will be the day. For me, I didn't feel like I was there until my first year...but a previous quit lasted a year, so I felt I had to get past that time. Kiwi, You sparked a great question to all! The members have a lot to add and you should take what you need and keep it close. Your quit is important to you and us and we are very proud of your accomplishments :) Josie _____________________ The SSC Support Team.
