Having a bit of a rough go of it...

Hello, Well, I'm on day 7 - one week down and it's strange how easy quitting seemed the first two days and then it just started going more and more downhill from there. I'm on the patch so I know I stil have plenty of nicotine so, I'm working on recognizing the 'habit' and separating it from what I previously presumed were cravings. That was easy enough to do on days 3-6. Well, day 7 dawned and all I thought about, all day long, was going to have a cigarette. Just one. It's been rough. My husband, who is quietly supportive (he'll had me a tin of Altoids and says 'Here, these may help') suggested looking at forums on line. It has helped but, wow, day 7 is just about finished and I really have had cigarettes on my mind pretty much the entire day. Hopefully day 8 will be better. :)

Im glad you found this site.. I too am on my 7th day, things have been going pretty darn good for me.. The first few days I did think about smoking but it was out of habit only.. Waking up, I think of smoking then I think NOPE, you quit remember.. Then after meals, after cleaning, bordem and ect.. I just pre-occupied myself to take my mind off of it then an hour later it pops back in and Ill be like HEY, I just forgot about it for a whole hour, WOW.. If I can suggest doing an early spring cleaning.. Spring cleaning takes alot of thought and alot of work, it will keep your mind off the smoking.. Maybe some puzzles, reading, crosswords and browsing this forum or other forums is nice too.. To read all the sucess stories and talk with others who are going through the same thing as you.. Hi Mellie, I'm glad you found this site. I found it by accident, but then there is no such thing as accidents. I found the tools just amazing. I spent a good 3 hours filing out the questionnaires and reading the Program Tools. Then you have the wonderful moderators - they are always there with a pat on the back. Then you also have the support of all these great people. It's a very nice place to be and to reach out when things seems like they're going wrong. Glad your husband is supportive. I'll leave the advice to the more experienced but I will say, you should definiely do the Program book and tools and use the Quit and Crave Meters. I'm keeping a journal. It's been keeping me going. Best wishes! Marie

Not easy, not always pretty, but what I read here is that you nailed another day. soon enough they will add up. and your husband sounds like a keeper. all this will pass, as will the craves - if you fight through them. looking to hear more from you in the future. Mellie, congratulations on your beautiful 7 smoke-free days. You are doing great, I used the patch, and I stayed right with the program. I believe it was 10 weeks, with 3 different step downs. They worked really well for me. The only problem I had was I had to take them off at night. I had such vivid dreams. And then for 3 or 4 days after I took the patch off I would think of cigarettes. But I know that it was nothing like I hear people talk about HELL WEEK...We are all diffenent what works for one will not work for another. I knew that I was not a cold turkey kind of person. I hope the patch starts giving you relief. I hope you are in bed fast asleep, and tomorrow will be a great day for you. Stay strong and keep on reading and posting. Mellie, stay busy, busy, busy...... Mellie. You are very early in your quit and it is a rough time. It sounds like you are doing great. I remember thinking of smoking all the time and feeling like it would never end but it does end. I promise. Keep taking it one step at a time and remember N.O.P.E. (Not One Puff Ever) That is how we all quit. As long as you don't light that next cigarette, you have got it made! Congratulations on 7 days! That is so AWESOME! Mellie, it does get better. Just one won't do. You'd have to have a whole pack. And then you'd be back where you were. And you don't want that, I know. Hang with the Altoids!
