I've Gained Weight

17 years ago 0 97 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
The last quit wasn't MY quit. I quit at my now ex-husband's :)insistence, although he continued to smoke. I gained weight, lost concentration, and was severely depressed every day until I started smoking again 100 days later. It was such a horrible experience that I was terrified of ever trying again. This time, I know to my core that it's right for me. Each grateful day without smoking is a blessing - and I can see the progress on my Quit Meter. Depression? fleeting, so temporary. And the weight gain? Couldn't be happening at a better time. Spring is on the way. By the time my metabolism stabilizes, it will also be time for yard work, gardening, hikes with the dog, house painting, hardscaping... physical activity and a time of the year when I naturally eat lighter and drink LOTS of water. My body will find the right weight. And I've got better things to do now than obsess about cigarettes or my weight. (If I can stop sleeping - LOL) Things happen exactly when they're supposed to. FUDGE!!!! I'm so upset. It seems I was off to a great start dieting while I quit but after three weeks I'm on the rise. Out of the blue I would catch myself snacking a lot. I've never snacked (when I smoked) but now I can't get enough. I want to be eating something all the time. In one week I'm now up three pounds. This is so depressing and frusterating. I still don't want a smoke so that's the good news but I can't gain weight. I'm so depressed. That is what is so depressing. Nothing seems fun anymore and I hate carrots. Why is all the good stuff so bad for you?! Okay - whiney vent over. I'm in the same boat, having gained back over half the weight I lost before I quit (I was down 12 pounds). Have I increased my food intake? Barely. I'd guess a normal person would have put on 2, maybe 3 pounds tops. But a gain of 8 in six weeks? You can't be serious! But since carrots are EVIL and I refuse to live on lettuce, not eating what I want to eat, an increase in exercise it is. I'm starting tomorrow on a new regime from a personal trainer, along with a dance class once a week. I may or may not keep the 2 mile, 30 minute power walks in, depends on how soon I want to get home! Let's get physical...physical... Everybody sing! Should clarify Danielle, this is a shift from the 2 mile, 30 minute power walks x 5 days a week that I've been doing since July. That's how I lost the 12 pounds to begin with. I quit smoking and 8 lbs came back without changing the eating/exercise regime, so now it's time to get medieval. :eg: My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/1/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 46 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,072 Amount Saved: 253 Life Gained: Days: 3 Hrs: 22 Mins: 9 Seconds: 45

I enjoyed all the answers on this. I was at the top end of my usual "acceptable" weight when I quit smoking, and have actually gained under 5 pounds (last time I checked), but I feel huge! Part of it is probably because I was on the heavy side of what I consider normal, and the little bit of extra, puts me into the category of buying larger clothes. ARGH! I've always been slim, and haven't had to work at it. I went on a couple of major eating binges, and was basically obsessed with food for awhile, but it took my mind off smoking. I rarely think about smoking, but I think about what I'm going to eat and when I'm going to eat it. It's getting on my nerves. All this cold, ugly, wet weather, has made it 100 times worse because I can't get outside for a nice long walk. Looks like I'm going to have to get more committed to the gym or stop whining! I'm like Windy... I don't want to give up chocolate, or my one pepsi a day. Maybe I will eventually, but not yet! Windy, I laughed at your lipsuction comment... I was wondering why they couldn't just cut the tire off around my mid-section! lol I also don't think mine is all due to quitting smoking... I think I've finally reached that point (the dreaded M word) in my life where the weight is not going to be as easy as it once was. Your comment about metabolism, Windy -- when does it get itself figured out? I put on 30 pounds the first time I quit for 10 years within 10 months. When you are 4'11" tall...that's a hefty baggage to carry. I didn't worry about putting the weight on, because the quit was more important than my vanity (smoking stinks period). What I had to do was very simple, Increase my Activity (in my case I started walking five miles a day 3 times a week) Watch what I ate (I ate nutritional meals, drank water (no soda), cut out fried foods) the weight did not magically melt away...but steadily (the best way) Now I'm gaining weight in this quit too, and feel the same way. My quit is more important than my vanity. But I'm older now too, so I will not allow myself to go over a certain weight. It gets harder to take weight off as you get older. when I get ready to take the weight off...I'll put a post in on it. auntdeb :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/1/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 48 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 2,440 Amount Saved: $228 Life Gained: Days: 6 Hrs: 17 Mins: 4 Seconds: 51

Yep, gained weight too. I don't want a cigarette, but I constantly want food. All the good intentions are out of the window, all the time. :/

Interesting - I have no idea but I would guess it is different for everyone. I guess I realized that my "metabolism was metabolizing" last week when I went on a four day binge (when storm stayed) where I ate and drank everything that I wasn't supposed to and still didn't gain weight. (I gained 5 lbs in one week earlier in my quit during a similar binge) I wonder if the Moderators would have a better idea when people's metabolisms usually get back to normal???
