Every day for the past week I intend to stop smoking. I have removed ashtrays etc the night before but so far I haven't made it past that first one in the morning. I think only one to stop the craving and then I won't smoke for the rest of the day. and that as they say is the end of that. If I could manage 24 hrs without smoking I think I might have a chance. Its how to start.

I feel terrible, all those lovely messages of support and here I am still smoking today. I have set next Monday as my first day. That will give me a few days to get prepared again. I have gotton Zylan and patches. Any advice on which would be better aid. I am assuming the two together wouldn't be a good idea.

Hi Bernie, Im new, really new, today is my quit day and i havent smoked since i went to bed last night (it's 6pm where i am so i feel im doing well) The "first thing fag" to me was everything, i couldent do anything without it, Last night i put my ashtray's etc in the bin and i will admit i was so tempted to just leave a bit of a cig for the morning, just a couple of puff's. I dident, i read all about how many hour's/week's it takes for diffrent chemicals to get out of your body and i realised that by not having the morning puff i was tempted to leave for myself i was getting a head start whilst i was sleeping :) Ive cleaned today..none stop! i just kept on doing somthing, anything. Good luck with it, i think that finding this website is a great first step, everyone's so helpful and it really is helping me, If i can do it then you can do it :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/23/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 0 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 0 Amount Saved: 0 Life Gained: Days: 0 Hrs: 0 Mins: 0 Seconds: 0

Bernie, I've been where you are so many times this past year. Don't give up on quitting. Pick a day like you have been and throw away all of your cigarettes and butts the night before (make sure you can't dig them out of the trash like I've done in the past so be sure to crush and soak them). In the morning, give yourself until noon. See if you can make it past the morning cigarette which was my personal favorite as well. But it was also the one that tripped me up the most. Good luck. Bernie... Read the post, and then read some more. There is so much information here...it will blow your mind and if our stories don't convince you that "You Can Do It", probably nothing will. We are...Ex-smokers...we know what you are about to face. If you want to know about any of the smoking aides to help you quit...I know as of today, that all of them are here at this site used by one person or several. or...if you want to go "Cold Turkey"...a ton of turkeys here to help you with ideas on handling it. I am a 56 yr-old Grandma..., quit once for 10 yrs "Cold-Turkey", and started back like a fool in 1993...those days are over now. but...the 2nd time around...I used something to help me quit. I lnow from my first cold-turkey quit...I could never do it again. On my 23 day as a non-smoker now...I'm soooo glad they invented some products to help us out.(I'm using Chantix Bernie, it's an rx you'll have to get from a Dr., but it works) God knows, most of us were only babies (teenagers) when we started and had no idea of what we were attaching ourselves to. Good luck Bernie and welcome to SSC auntdeb :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/1/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 22 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,133 Amount Saved: $104.5 Life Gained: Days: 3 Hrs: 2 Mins: 52 Seconds: 41

Jelly Bean: Nothing weird about that at all! But, then, there's nothing weird about the fact that we spent so much time deliberately sucking hot toxins and poisons into our lungs and believing we were ENJOYING it! The crying is very normal -- you're grieving. Just try to step back and realize that instead of grieving, you should be embracing the new, nonsmoking you! If you need any help, all you have to do is ask, you know that, right? You're doing great! Bernie: You have gotten some exellent advice here. I'm glad you posted and requested assistance. I hope you're reading, listening and preparing. We're here for you if you need us -- you just have to ask. You CAN do this -- but you must want to quit more than you want to smoke. Don't listen to the junkie in you. Listen to the wise person in you who knows you must quit and put this addiction to bed forever. Welcome Bernie, To know that we are addicts is not enough but to kow that we need to do something about the addiction is top priority. And it sounds like you know that you need to do something about it, so why not start right here right now. Maybe starting first thing in the morning is not working for you, why not stop right now. Throw all the smokes away, remove all ashtrays. Then when the morning rolls around you have already prepared yourself for the day. You know that you did not suffer a serious medical condition by not smoking. Start right now and say that is it, I'm putting them down. You can beat this addiction but only with some determination and motivation. Start by doing one hour at a time and before you know it the days will have flown right by. Now I am not a old timer but I have been here and done this before many times, this time I am convinced that I can do this for today, and so far I have done it for 8 days. I am not going to lie and say that it was a cake walk it was not. But everyday is a little better and alot more sweeter in more ways than one. Tomorrow I will deal with tomorrow. hang in there this is possible. Hi Bernie - Ask yourself (and be honest with self) - is your desire to quit stronger than your desire to smoke? Dig deep - and go deeper if you need to... Take the time to work with this question as it will reflect the outcome of your quit... The clarity you will have from this question will take you to the next step...
